The fact there was a flower thief in the village followed by the information of Ding Xuelan getting struck by lightning spread all over the village. 

All the mers believed that it was Ding Xuelan who had stolen the underpants that belonged to Xiao Zimo. 

Even the women thought the same but they had no evidence and they knew that the Ding family was not easy to deal with so they did not do anything severe just gossiped a little in front of the Ding house. 

Daddy Ding and Mother Ding would naturally not admit that Ding Xuelan did something so terrible and shameful. They immediately refused the words of the villagers and scolded them for bullying their family as if they were outsiders.
