Highway became local road as the smooth drag of the wheels of their vehicles became rough, grating bumps met with uneven dips and sudden bumps. The narrow pass of walls of trees suddenly vanished, before stretching out to the wide, open space that traveled far into the horizon. The shift from being closed off to the exposure of open farmlands was unsettling. Where the sharp gusts of whistles through the trees had become a familiar companion while speeding across the highway: the distant groan of the flat landscape felt impersonal and lonely. The contrast was almost juxtapose where rural county should feel quiet and comforting instead sent child shivers down one's alone as the doubt of safety became seeded.
