CHAPTER SIX

CHAPTER SIX

It was the sixth day since her dad dropped her off at the penthouse and he only came over once to give her some money.

She sat by the window. Something was up and she needed to find out. She grabbed her coat and phone and headed out.

First, she went to her father's office only to find out he wasn't at work. ' where could he have gone?' she asked herself.

Taking out her phone she called her dad. " Dad? I'm lost, could you maybe pick me up?"

" What? You were supposed to stay at the penthouse."

" Yes, but I got bored."

" Where are you now?" He asked clearly annoyed.

" Outside your office but you weren't inside,"

" Yes. They're some certain things I needed to do first."

" It's okay."

After a few minutes, he arrived.

" Dad could you please drop me off at the mall. I'd love to buy somethings."

" Okay."

After buying the things she needed, she came out with her dad.

" Um... Dad it's okay. You might still be busy with work. I can go back on my own."

" Really dear? Are you sure?"

" Yes dad. It's okay."

" Thanks dear." He gives her a peck on her forehead.

Few seconds after her dad left, she got into a cab, " please follow that car."

Her dad was not telling her something and she had to find out herself. She wasn't going to sit around and do nothing.

Wait, he stopped.... at a diner?

She got down and went in. Sitting at a far corner, her eyes followed him. He joined the table of a woman and two kids? Wait, why was he giving them the things he had bought?

They had dinner together and some ice cream on their way back. Jane followed her dad all the way back to a duplex. Did he live here?

That day she returned to the penthouse in low spirit. All this while she waited thinking her dad would come. Everything was a lie. So he just wanted to keep her away from his new family. He never cared about her.

Her tears trickled down her cheeks, he left her here all alone to be with his new family. Who was she kidding? It was obvious that everyone had moved on. She was the only one dwelling in the past.

Why was she here. He was probably too busy to care about her.

She laughed at her foolishness. She did make the wrong choice.

She grabbed her bag and left for the train station.

Train to Winter hood - cancelled.

She couldn't bear to stay here anymore. She took her phone and dialed some digits,

" Hello Lina"

" Jane? Why are you calling me at this time?"

" I need your help."

" My help? You do know we're in different places right?"

" Yes and that's why I need your help."

" What do want?"

" I'm sorry I fought with you about my mom and I really hope you can forgive me." Apologized Jane sincerely.

" It's okay. I understand. You've always wanted to get a chance to spend time with your dad. As your friend I should have tried to understand instead of judging you."

" It's fine. You were right."

" I was?" She was a bit surprised.

" Yeah, but I can't really say anything now so we'll talk about it later."

" Where are you?"

" At the train station."

" You're coming back?"

" Something like that"

" What's wrong?"

" My train was cancelled and I don't have any other ways to come back."

" Soo.... What do I do?"

" Well my dad's old truck is still parked behind the house. I was wondering if you could maybe come get me?"

" Well maybe, but I don't think I can do that today. It's kinda late."

" When would you be able to come?"

" In the morning. You should probably go back, unless you're going to catch a cold."

" Okay. Let me know when you get here."

" Sure. Bye."

" Um Lina, thank you."

Carolina smiled, " no biggie,"

Jane had to stay at the penthouse and even though that night, her dad didn't come.

She had an idea of what was happening but she didn't want to leave without talking to her dad. She didn't want to have a reason to come back again.

She needed to hear it from him. To be able to move on completely.

Mr James arrived at the penthouse two hours after she called.

" Jane good morning,"

This was probably the last time she'd have to spend with her dad, so she was making every moment count. In the end, he was her dad and there was nothing she could do about it.

Just like old times, she wanted to spend time with him just like old times.

She smiled, "dad, I made blueberry pancakes, your favorite and home made orange juice."

After he took his seat, Jane served him some pancakes and juice. She felt happy, " so how is it?" She asked gingerly.

He takes a bite, " it tastes okay for an amateur." He teased.

Her eyes stung because she was once again reminded of the good old days, when her parents teased each other. They cherished all the simple things.

" Then maybe you could give me some lessons. I'd be your number one student."

His smile faded, he stares at her straight in the eyes, " there's something I need to tell you dear,"

She takes a deep breath. " Okay what is it?"

" I have another family."

She staggered back a little. There goes her little hope. She was right, he did have another family. So right now, she was just an obstacle preventing him from spending time with his family.

" Jane I wanted to tell you but I didn't really know where to start."

" Well technically, you could have just lead with' I have a new family' like you just did."

" I'm sorry,"

" Tell me the truth, these last few days where you really busy at work or was that just another lie?"

" I promised the kids to give my undivided attention to them so I had to spend time with them."

Now she was all tears, " you lied to me all this while just to spend time with them?"

" Jane I'm really sorry."

" How long were you going to keep me here? Would you have really celebrated Christmas with me if I stayed? Or will you have given me the same excuse about work?"

He didn't answer her but the look in his eyes gave her all the answers she needed. So she came here to have another lonely Christmas. What a joke.

She wiped her tears, "one more question can you please tell why you and mom separated?"
