Welcome to EDEN (3) - 4

"Wake up."

A low grumbling voice resounded in my head as I groggily woke up in a dark space.

"Wake up to reality. Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world."

Hearing this, I was obviously confused.

"What?"

"Cough cough... Ah, you've awoken."

Now awake, I found that the voice seemed to be coming from all directions, from everywhere.

And it seemed that the voice was more... chunni(?) then what I first though?

Anyways, the voice then continued.

"I have a simple question for you, otherworlder: Do you love books?"

"Yes." I answered, without hesitating.

"..."

"Interesting... You truly do love books."

"Of course, they were they only things that kept me alive for many years, literally."

"Well then, I guess you're fit to take this job."

"Wait, that's all?"

"Yes."

"I'm going to get a legendary class just like that?"

"Yes."

"There are no hidden clauses?"

"YES!"

"But why?" I asked, truly baffled.

"Well, the requirement for this class change was that you truly loved books, and you did. If you had lied, then you would have been kicked out, and if you had said no truthfully, then you would have been class changed to an assistant like the lady that opened the door for you."

"..."

I took some time to try to process this, after all, this was way out of what I had expected.

I mean, when you heard that a task was so impossible that someone failed it in one second, you would have thought of trying to fight an impossible monster or trying to jump across a 100 km chasm, but no, it was just, "Do you love books?"

"Well, your new assistant, Lucille, will explain it all to you when you wake up."

That was the last thing I heard before I was engulfed by blackness again.

...

"SLAP!"

A sharp, stinging pain on my cheek immediately woke me up.

Groaning, I rubbed the red area and asked,

"Couldn't you have woken me up more gently?"

"No."

Propping my hands under my body, I pushed myself up from the ground.

Then, I was assaulted by a series of system notifications.

Just swiping them all away, I decided to just take a look at my status window.

[Player Name: Ash of Winter - Level 2

Stamina: 11

Mana: 16

Durability: 3

Willpower: 100

Job: Magician

Class: The Moon's Bookkeeper (Legendary/Part-Time)

Title(s): Rule Breaker, Archivist

Skill(s) (Locked): Bookkeeper's Arsenal]

First off, there were my stats, which were about the same as any magician's except for the willpower.

You see, although the first four stats were pretty self explanatory, the durability and willpower stat names often tripped people up in the beginning.

Durability was basically physical resistance, but it also included effects such as poison resistance.

Willpower, on the other hand, was magic resistance, but with effects like mental attack resistance included.

My durability was noticeably low, but that was due to the Magician job, so it was expected.

My willpower, on the other hand, was definitely a lot higher than an average magician's.

I could probably attribute this huge disparity to the fact that I was practically an old man, and had gone through more trials than most could, whilst keeping their sanity that is.

Anyways, on to the bottom of the status window, where the weird things were.

The first thing that I hadn't expected was my class, which, although was a legendary class, was named, "Bookkeeper".

But, looking at my skill, it was pretty obvious what I had to do.

The skill that I earned was "Bookkeeper's Arsenal", which basically gifted me the ability to handle and treat old books like I was a person that had been doing it for centuries.

At first, I was disheartened when I saw this skill, but when I took a closer look, I realized that "Bookkeeper's Arsenal" was a skill that encompassed many other skills and combined them all into one skill.

This meant that, although these other skills didn't show up in my status window, I could still use them, and at a Godly level too.

If you're confused, then here's a simple explanation.

Skills could become more powerful as long as you increased your proficiency in a skill. So, as an example, imagine this: A Beginner level fireball would be about the size of your palm, but a Godly level fireball would destroy half an entire continent.

So, with all of these skills at a Godly level, I was basically already a superhuman.

But now, I was left wondering, did this count as me earning these skills?

Because, if it didn't, then I would be screwed for the future.

That was why I was extremely relieved when I saw that the class was only part time.

It seemed like I only needed to don the class, The Moon's Bookkeeper, at nighttime, and that I could actually use another class during the day.

And, although my skills were now locked, there was some fine print at the bottom of the system prompt that told me that if I class changed into another class, then any skills given with the class change would not be blocked and I could gain them too.

I actually almost cried when I saw this, as now, I could have backup powers if Bookkeeper's Arsenal wasn't counted as earned.

Finally, there was the new title that I had earned.

The title of "Archivist" basically gave me a 1,000% boost in all my stats whenever I was handling books, both new and old.

This gave me some new ideas, and at this point, I had already changed the majority of my plans.

After all, this class change was full of hidden surprises.

Well anyways, after I finished studying everything and reading the fine print, I finally stood back up and dusted off my clothes, only to find myself in a black and white three piece suit with thin black gloves on, a pair of glasses similar to that of Lucille's on my own head.

"The outfit comes with the class. You think I would want to dress like this outside?" Said Lucille, as if reading my mind, whilst pointing at her own, very old fashioned clothes that probably no girl today would like wearing.

She continued,

"The building probably told you that I would explain everything to you, but I won't. Figure it out yourself. Your workspace is in the middle of the room past that door."

Then, she disappeared, as if she was never there in the first place.

Sighing due to her cold personality, I could only do the logical thing and follow her instructions even if I didn't want to.

Reaching the door, I opened it and stepped into a completely new world.

Who knew that this would change my life forever?

Thanks for reading!
