Chapter 8
Alice slept peacefully after taking her medicines. All the family members along with their servants left the room to let her rest.
They walked directly towards the main hall.
As the duke and the duchess sat on the main sofa, followed by Daniel and Stella, who sat on the side sofa, everyone was lost in deep thought for a minute.
"Your highness, the fact that young lady is suffering from amnesia is still a doubt" Dr. Charles stepped forward and said, "who knows may be after few days lady Alice may remember…"
"She should not remember anything" the duchess said ferociously.
She looked at the poor doctor with angry eyes, "I don't what you will do but she should never remember anything."
"I understand" her family doctor backed off and stood silently.
"Dear" the duchess suddenly changes her serious tone to the flirtatious one, "I am planning to take Alice to our fief."
"What? Why?" her husband asked, surprised at his wife's idea.
"By taking Alice to our fief, I can separate her from the high society. Don't you think?" his wife said with her brightest smile.
"Separate her from high society? Why?" the duke enquired.
"Because" his wife said, with a cunning smile, "I wish to."
The duke immediately understood that his wife had decided, and she won't back off from it.
"Do whatever you want" he said with a sigh.
"Mom, can I come too?" Stella spoke up.
"Yes, my dearest daughter" her mother said, "your sister will be lonely without you."
"I know mom will approve" Stella said.
"What about you Daniel?" the duke looked at his son.
"I will listen to you. If you wish me to stay, then I will stay and if you wish me to…"
"What do you want to go?" the duke asked seriously, interrupting his son.
"Yes" Daniel answered honestly.
"Fine, then wait for few weeks even I will accompany you" the duke said.
Everyone in the room were surprised, including the servants. Duke Etkinson is the only prime minister of the kingdom. He is famous for his proposals and broad-minded thinking. He is the most powerful person in the court presently. And, him quitting from his job seemed suspicious.
"Ever since I kicked out that girl from the capital, the palace air has become difficult to breath. The wish to quit was there in my mind since long. If you give me few weeks, then I can wrap my work, and peacefully resign from my work. And all the above, I want to take care of the Alice."
The duke gave an explanation.
"Fine" the duchess said, "if you feel comfortable by quitting, then resign immediately. Even Alice will become healthy in the meantime. The path from here to the fief is long and not easy."
"Good. Since it is decided, I will go to the palace immediately and see how much time it will take to wrap everything" the duke said and got up.
"Fine. Even cancel that damn engagement" the duchess suggested.
"Yes, I will. I guess prince will be happy to do it" the duke said with a sad smile.
He left the room immediately leaving everyone with the deep sigh.
