Chapter 37
They make it to the fourth child’s house. They’d called all the families, and between work and visiting their child, Adam, the parents had no time to meet with them but had given them free run of the house, just asking them to lock up behind them and try not to make a mess.
Rene finds the key and lets them in. Evan starts in the kid’s bedroom, then goes to the bathroom and kitchen, the rooms he knows Adam would have been in for sure. Then he starts searching the other rooms. He doesn’t find any mold or damp, or anything that looks out of place in a family home. When he’s in the kitchen, he even checks what kind of food the family’s eating, but it’s all fresh. Nothing looks out of date or damaged.
“Goddamn it,” Evan mutters as he swabs the toys in the family room.
