Chapter 14

"Hey, you paged?" I said to Derek walking into his office closing the door behind me.

"Yeah, I like to say hi to my best friend occasionally?" He joked smiling.

"You know I've been busy trolling for cases. I've been here since yesterday evening. Last night a guy crashed his motorcycle, had rebar jammed in the base of his skull and Nelson let me do the extraction." I smiled. I was exhausted, but the adrenaline and love of medicine kept me going.

"Lucky, I've been doing paperwork all day. This job is just, I would love to have something jammed in my brain that way I could see the inside of an OR." He joked making me laugh as he looked at all of the paperwork spread across his desks.

"The life of the Chief." I smiled as I took a seat across from him.

"You know what I was thinking?" He asked me making me raise my eyebrows. I never knew what would come out of Derek Shepherd's mouth, so I was curious.

"What?" I asked.

"Me, you, Meredith and Jackson should do dinner." He says.

"Derek, you know I don't do the whole double date thing. I don't have time for that right now." I sighed. Being a resident, I looked forward to going home and laying in bed while watching my favorite movies until I fell asleep, which was always quickly considering my body is almost always so drained from work. Using my free time to socialize wasn't the most appealing to me.

"Come on, it would be fun."

"Fine, but only if I can invite Izzie and you can find one of your other surgeon friends to keep her company. I want to get her out of the house for a night." I say.

"Deal, I can just get Mark to come." He shrugged.

"No. Jackson knows about me and Mark's history, so having dinner together would just be awkward." I shake my head.

"No it won't, once Avery gets used to Mark he'll like him. Marks a likeable guy." Derek says.

"Not true." I chuckled before thinking it over. "Fine, but just so Izzie will have company. I'll go find her and tell her about our plans." I say, before leaving to find Izzie.

"Hey Iz." I smile seeing her at the front desk.

"Hey." She smiles.

"Do you want to hang out tonight?" I asked her.

"Like a girls night?" She smirked.

"Not exactly, I was thinking me, you, Meredith, Jackson, Mark, and Derek could do dinner."

"That sounds more like a triple date and I'm not interested in dating right now, especially not dating Mark. He's man whore." Izzie says.

"So was Alex." I pointed out. "Don't think of it as a date, just think of it as socializing with co workers. Come on I would be a bad friend to let you just sit in the house and never go out." I pouted.

"Fine, I guess I do need to enjoy a night out."

"You do." I nodded. Izzie had been in a little bit of a rut since her divorce. It was understandable and as her friend I just wanted to help her get past everything.

"Okay Ms. know it all." She chuckled. "How are things with you and Jackson going?"

"Great, I'm really happy." I smiled,

"He's a good guy, George would like him if he was still here." She said

"Yeah he would've, unlike any of the other guys I was with."

"Remember when he found out you and Mark had a thing going on?" She laughed.

"Yeah he almost had a heart attack." I laughed thinking about how mad he got.

"Well I'll see you a little later I need to get back to Bailey." She says

"Okay." I smiled remaining at the desk as I checked patient charts. Jackson walked over to me a short while later.

"Hello beautiful." He said kissing me.

"Hey Avery." I smiled.

"You didn't come over last night." He sighed.

"I know, I took an extra shift." I shrugged.

"Okay, but you're coming over tonight aren't you?" He asks.

"Yeah after our triple date."

"Triple date?" He frowns.

"Yeah. Me, you, Derek, Meredith, Mark, and Izzie." I said saying the last part lowly.

"Mark? I don't want to hang out with the guy you used sleep with." Jackson frowned.

"I know, but it's for Izzie. I have you and Meredith has Derek so we needed someone to keep Izzie company. Please let's just go for her, she needs some fun since her and Alex are officially divorced." I pleaded looking up at him.

"Fine, but I deserve a lot of sex tonight."

"I can do that, I actually have a couple of minutes right now if you want to get started." I smirked. No matter how busy I was, I could always make time for sex and so could Jackson.

"Okay." He chuckled leading me to an on call room. We enjoyed ourselves in there until I got paged by Nelson.

I met him in the OR and scrubbed in on a patient with a brain bleed. He let me do the majority of the surgery, like always. One of my favorite parts of working with him. We finished successfully and I took the patient to her room before going to check his other patients stats.

"Okay Mr. Johnson, the good news is that your stats are better then when you were checked this morning, but you do need a blood transfusion, so I'll go get you some blood and I'll be back in a second to get you started." I told my patient before leaving.I continued looking over patients chart as I walked, not paying attention to the floor and suddenly I feel myself stumble over something.

"Ouch, I've got to start watching where I'm going." I mumbled to myself, wincing from the impact of my body hitting the floor. I automatically noticed I was covered in on a warm liquid. Looking down I realized I was covered in what looked like blood. "What the hell." I mumbled looking behind me to see what I stumbled over and I was no where near ready for what I saw. Izzie was laying there lifeless in a puddle of blood with a gunshot wound to the head.

"Oh my god, Izzie, Izzie." I called shakily in a state of disbelief. "No, no, no. This can't be happening, wake up Izzie, please, please wake up. You can't, you can't be dead." I cried crawling over to her body.

"I've been looking for you." I heard a familiar voice say making me look up. Even though my eyes were blurry from tears I could still make out who the figure in front of me was. Gary Clark.

I remembered him all to well. It was heartbreaking having to pull the plug on his wife a couple of weeks ago and it was something that I thought of daily.

My attention left from his face and instantly went to his right hand which held a gun. I instantly knew that he was the one shot Izzie and that I was in danger.

"Mr. Clark." I sniffled standing up slowly.

"You unplugged my Allison." He said, a blank expression covering his face.

"Please Mr. Clark, we can, we can fix this." I said stuttering from panic. I could feel sweat begin to form on my forehead as I raised my hands shakily, focusing on not hyperventilating. I was so scared that I literally felt sick. "You don't have to do this." I said desperation filling my voice.

"Unless you can bring back my Allison, you can't fix anything!" He shouted making me jump as my heart began beating even faster.

"We...we were obeying her wishes. She didn't want any extraordinary measures taken." I tried to defend myself.

"That was for me to decide, not you. I was her husband." He says pointing the gun at me. My legs felt like spaghetti. I felt like I could collapse from fear at any moment realizing that this man was planning to shoot me.

"Please Mr. Clark, I didn't want to. I had no choice it was the law, but, but your wife, she wouldn't want this. She's was a sweet, caring lady. She wouldn't want you to hurt people." I shook my head unable to hold back tears.

"She's not here to tell us what she would want is she!" He yelled.

"Please Mr. Clark." I begged, hoping for some bit of mercy but there was none as he pulled the trigger.

I have watched countless movies where people get shot. There's always this bang before you see the character collapse to the ground, bleeding out slightly but real life was completely different. As soon as the trigger was pulled all that could be heard was was this deafening sound, comparable to fireworks. Bullets are so tiny, but the impact as it enters your body is overwhelming. The hot metal bullet ripped through my skin entering my abdomen causing me to let out a shriek as a sharp pain spread through my stomach and I collapsed to the ground.

I laid there gasping from air as my body tried to process the pain, the shock. I couldn't help but let out groans as I placed my hand over my wound, feeling the blood pour out. Clark walked towards me with the gun pointed towards my head making me realize this was it. This was how I was going to die. Bleeding out from a gunshot wound on the floor of Seattle Grace Hospital.

"You should see the look on your face." He chuckled bitterly. "I should shoot you again right now, but I have to save these bullets, so I'm going to leave you here and let you lay there knowing that you're going to die." He said taking one last look at me before walking away leaving me gasping from the shock and pain I was feeling. All I could think about is Jackson. I don't want to leave Jackson. I could feel the little strength I had leaving my body as I lay there bleeding out.

I tried my best build up of the strength to crawl somewhere to find help, but it was too painful. All I could do was lay there looking at Izzie's dead body as I realized I would soon have the same fate.
