“Which is why it was cheap,” he pointed out as they loaded their bags in the trunk. “But the engine is in good working condition, which is what counts.”

“Where to now?” Lou asked once they were on the road.

“I think it’s more a case of what now?” Wayne said. “One option, we hang it up, change our identities again, and move to a new city.”

Rae disagreed. “We’d leave our clients in the lurch if we did that.”

“And possibly endanger them if we don’t,” Wayne replied. “Once Regotti is certain he’s found us, and that’s probably already the case or will be very soon, he’s going to come gunning for Lou, and maybe me. It would be hard for Lou to act as a bodyguard when he’d be as much a target as the person he’s supposed to be protecting.”

“What if…” Rae started to say, then shook her head.

“Go on,” Lou said. “What if what?”
