“It’s so nice to meet you, Mrs. Sterling.”
“Thank you,” she said. Matt noted she didn’t return the introduction as her eyes quickly scanned him from the feet up.
“Your father has been calling for you. He’s in his study.”
James nodded but remained silent.
“I was just heading out,” Matt said and started gathering his things. “You have a really beautiful home Mrs. Sterling.”
“Thank you,” she said again, as though she’d been fielding compliments the whole day. James helped Matt collect his things and place them into his bag.
Before turning around, Mrs. Sterling looked at Matt again and said, “It was nice to meet you, too, Matt. I hope to see you around here again.” Before he could reply she was down the path again, navigating the cracks in the concrete as she walked away. James let out a breath as soon as his mother disappeared and started for the entrance, too.
