Chapter 21

Will wouldn’t allow that to happen.

When they reached the right floor, Will stepped out of the elevator and almost stumbled over his own clumsy feet—Corey stood at the end of the hallway, his back to them as he stared out of a window that overlooked the hospital’s parking deck. As Will approached, his hands clenched into unconscious fists he struggled to keep at his sides. He wanted to rush to Corey, catch the guy in his arms, and press his lips to that pale forehead in wordless greeting.

With Sorensen on his tail, the most he could do was clear his throat to announce their presence as they came up behind the hustler. “Corey.”

The smile on Corey’s face as he turned faltered when he noticed Sorensen. “Who’s she?”

“Chief Loretta Sorensen,” Will said.

Sorensen held out a hand for Corey to shake.

“Policechief. She’s my boss.”
