I decided to pry and said, “What were you going to say?”

“I just figured out why you look so rested and so much more yourself. He’s responsible for that, isn’t he?”

“You’re too smart for your own good sometimes. Now get going on those calls.”

She left, and shortly I was caught up in the routine of soothing clients, most of whom were in one sort of trouble or another, many of whom needed—or thought they needed, which from the client’s perspective amounts to the same thing—desperately to see me. These I referred back to Rosemary for the purpose of scheduling appointments. I’d completely lost track of the time when, between calls, my private line rang.

“Hello.”

“Hi,” Philip said. “Are we still on for lunch?”

I suddenly became aware of the time and was surprised to find that it was nearly noon. “Sure. I had Rosemary make reservations at the Peachtree Grille for one. If you can be here a little before that, we can walk over there.”

“Sure.”
