~~~~~something different by adenkule gold~~~~~~~
Relationships.
Many people have a peculiar way of explaining it, many say that people are related by blood, some say that some relationship are only situationship only lasting as it's cause ends while others say that it was the definition of feelings that trailed among people, it was always in a wide variety.
But to Kirabo, relationship meant one thing.
A barrier
A point that determined your life with the person you are sharing a certain relationship with, that determined the way you should act around, the level of modest you should use while with them what you should say to them.
It was a lot for her to handle but she didn't know other type of relationship as she haven't gone out friendship and family line yet, but in moment like this where she stared at the lovebirds who where currently holding a semi concert in their rent car.
Of all the couple she knew or have read about, this one didn't have a barrier in their relationship, they could say what they wanted to each other without holding back, they poured all their feelings to each and Kirabo envied them as she knew that she could never find what they had.
"Can you at least roll the window down?" she inquired for the fifth time on the day as she was getting hyperventilated by the heat inside the car and the overwhelming music volume.
Whether they didn't hear or did, the couple didn't respond, they were busy displaying dance moves to each other, her sister, Melissa was shaking her butt carefree syncing to the music while on the other her boyfriend, Ben was propping up from his seat they were dancing to 'Tuza by Mike kayihura'.
Kirabo wondered if they weren't feeling hot as she was but she decided to blame it all on her ultimately hate for outdoors especially in summer.
"CAN YOU FUCKING ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN, It's like sixty degrees for good sake?" She half screamed,they both turned to look her at but continued their mini-dancing contest totally ignoring her presence.
Well, just what I had in thought when
I protested about all this trip,she thought sardonically.
She rolled her eyes and fell back to have a mini conversation with her conscience which was telling her to also ignore their presence as they were doing, her anger which was basically exaggerating her power saying that she could throw them out of the car like hulk and drive the car back to Kigali and her hope said that she could always snitch the power couple and go back to Kigali on a bus but her economist side howled in mockery reminding her how broke she was to afford a ticket back to Kigali.
She sighed in defeat.
The power couple suddenly stopped singing and sat back properly letting out exasperated sighs and breathing hard as if they had a marathon.
"God, I missed dancing" Melissa commented as she took a bottle of water and bolted it down in her throat.
"Wait, till we get to Kivu, it will be rock and roll" Ben said, he glanced at Kirabo before rolling the windows down.
"A thank you would suffice" He added with amusement evident in his voice.
Kirabo snorted.
"Thank you very much both of you for being more mature not childlike Everytime I get to see a new side of each of you"
"Sometimes I think your sister will not attend college casually, she's very sardonically and sarcastic to be a normal girl, I think she secretly plans to be a nun, I swear I once caught her making vows in the parish and the really has this stink eye, she give off the vibe of a novice" Ben added warily but trying hard not to smirk.
"I don't have a stink eye and.."
"No wonder, she has always been obsessed with purity stuff from when we were young, she can't have a boyfriend you know, says that they make her lose her religion now it dawns me that she is dying virgin" Melissa chimmed in staring at kirabo trying to pull on a disappointed face.
"Shut it, both you know that I can't be a nun for godsake I am not even religious, I am turning atheist as days go by and here you are accusing me of turning into a nun, you are ridiculous" Kirabo hissed as she pulled her dreadlocks to refrain from smacking their heads together.
"But you are Catholic ..."
"So is Melissa"
"She has....me?" Ben added as he glanced at Melissa who in turn winked at him.
"So this isn't about me being sarcastic uh?" she paused as she smugly looked forth between the couple " it is about me being single, isn't it?"
"What gave us away?" Melissa asked innocently.
"I wonder what" she added sarcastically "Seriously, what's up with your recent addiction and annoyance to my status? Because me,myself who should be having problems, I am physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally satisfied with it"
"Kirabo, you just got out of your highschool we think it would be beneficial if you got yourself a boyfriend or boyfriends for better" Ben replied looking at Melissa who was nodding in agreement.
"We're not having this conversation"
"You seriously don't consider that we will be your social cycle forever Kirabo you have to come out and experience the outside world" Melissa added.
"And by the outside world you mean a boyfriend?" Kirabo asked annoyance dripping in her tone.
Melissa and Ben nodded. She stared at them, their actions meant a lot to her, this was a way to get a rid of her as a third wheel not that she always wanted in their presence as a third wheel but they forced her.
"Are you sure you are not adopted?" Melissa asked.
"I could ask you the same, mom and dad had an approximately height of 5 feet 2" Kirabo remarked with a sneer because Melissa was the tallest in their intermediary family and large one in girls.
"I at least have their charm"
"Just because you don't see my charm doesn't make me any less charmer" Kirabo retorted.
"I see no charm in prying your head in books all day long" Ben provided.
"You are not wearing your glasses"
"I don't wear glasses" Ben asked looking confused
"See that's a part of my charm, I know what people need and recommend their solution.... Unfortunately Ben you are turning blind buy some glasses" Kirabo said her voice full of feign concern.
"Even if I was a telescope, I would fail to see your charm after all it is seen by eyes of our hearts not physical eyes" Ben added.
"I didn't know that your heart's eyes are blind, you are leading a poor life"Kirabo remarked.
Ben and Melissa sighed.
"Why do I feel like your future husband has a lot to handle?" Melissa commented.
"Why do you feel like you are practically abducting me to sell me to a fat old Congolese man as his girlfriend down there?" She asked with a snort narrowing her eyes to them.
Ben gasped dramatically and glared at Melissa.
"You told her?..... this was supposed to be a secret" Ben said trying to lighten up the situation.
I was going to add something more sardonic but the car hit something ,we strumbled forward but not bad enough to stop suddenly reminding her that we were taking a rural road not the legal highway.
"So, Mr Gasana care to explain why we are on the rural route again?" She asked feeling as if she deserve to hear his stupid excuse again.
"The car doesn't have proper check up since last two months, I didn't want to collide with police" He replied smugly.
"But last week, we practically out some sense into your head" Melissa shook her head for effect and leaned closer to him" Your father literally almost bought you a new car, a new Mercedes and you refused it bringing up your pride up, really? and look where we are now, playing hide and seek with police in a rental mini van" She added fell back in her seat.
"Melissa, I told you that I am planning to buy my own, I can't have my father buying me everything always because he can" Ben muttered to her.
"He wants what best for you, you are his only child, it's okay to pamper you" Melissa remarked.
"I need to grow up" Ben replied.
"You are twenty six, you shouldn't wish for further growth because growth literally comes with DEATH" Kirabo quoted.
"I can't always depend on him and I think that's the first step, buying my own car" Ben continued on,ignoring Kirabo's comment.
"Then except you, who or what do you suggest that he spends his money on?" Melissa asked.
"I don't know but all I know is that I am not a good place to invest his money, I once told him to open a chicken restaurant because it would appease his appetite for chicken" Ben chuckled remembering a day when his father bought five chicken to share with him but ended up eating four of them blaming Ben that he was turning lame but that he couldn't even eat a two chicken.
"You know what, whatever makes you sleep at night" Kirabo added seeing his illogical determination.
A new idea popped in Kirabo's head, she jumped from my seat happily that she was going to get out this roughly rugged terrain road.
"Tell me at least you have your soldier identity card" Melissa's eyes lit up as she fully understood what Kirabo meant, in Rwanda, no police officer could literally stop a soldier's car.
Ben looked at them blankly and shook his head, Kirabo fell back in her backseat as her profound happiness, Melissa just sneered at him.
"Now, I don't know how I am going to survive another a hour in this road"Melissa commented suddenly looking as a mummified body.
"Then let's nap in the middle of road"
"Nap? Take a nap you seriously forgot your brain with your identity card" Melissa retorted and they start to bicker.
Kirabo laid back trying to wonder how this whole week, the power couple have been shopping for clothes for the trip for the whole last week, Melissa already had a closet full of clothes but couldn't help but spent her boyfriend's money and bought new clothes which was fun to say because the trip would only last two days or one day counting the number of hours they would spend
in the car.
And ironic as it was, they have prepared the trip this whole week wholeheartedly buying and paying everything needed for it only to forget their safety pass on the last moment.
Remind me again why I am here not snacking my face in my pillow? Oh right just because Melissa threatened to burn my little library and roast me on it, this self righteous bitch, Kirabo thought as she looked up to the couple who have gone from bickering to petting each other's cheek.
"At least you didn't forget your attitudes" Kirabo commented sarcastically slowly rising her novel 'freedom writers' .
"We can hear you" they said in unison.
"As intended"
The heavy silence fell upon them and it was totally draining Melissa as she was constantly checking on the rearview mirror to look at Kirabo who was seriously focused on her novel or pretending to be to prevent her sister from any unwanted advances.
"Kira..?" Melissa finally broke the silence turning to look at her sister properly who were determined to ignore her.
"Kirabo, I told you that you shouldn't be reading books we are on a holiday" Kirabo looked up from her book after finally deciding that ignoring Melissa wasn't the best solution with her pestering presence.
"How many times should I tell you that reading is another form of relaxation" Kirabo asked feeling irritated, Everytime her sister asked that question she wonder if she didn't know or was simply trying to get on her nerves but mostly the latter.
"I see no difference books are books anyway " Melissa added.
"Books are classified into many categories, there are educative ones and there are also novels which make them the entertaining categories" Kirabo continued.
"I still see no difference" Ben threw in joining the ploy.
"Any intellectual person can see it" Kirabo simply added satisfied to come up with that.
"Are you indirectly saying that we are ignorant?" Ben asked, casting her a threatening gaze.
"If you're interpreting it that way"
"Good God, I major in medicine to be called dumb" Melissa responded with a victorious grin on her face.
"Given your names, I am amazed you even know what books are" Kirabo said clearly amused by this whole thing.
Ben frowned "What about our names?"
"Your name Benjamin, practically symbolize last borns which can't make you any brighter at any cost and you Melissa, it literally means ' honey bee', who the hell names their kids "honey bee' it practically rhymes with dumb queen"
Stone silence.
"I really thinking we should thrown her out of the car" Melissa suggested calmly.
"Wait, till we get to that bamboo forest similar to Nyungwe, so that she can have her intellectual conversation with monkeys" Ben replied in the same tone.
"Care to translate? I don't know non-intellectual languages!" I retorted back as the car stopped but Ben wasn't listening.
As he was shouting at two cars in front of us, one dark blue range Rover and a black open space Benz Mercedes, they were parked, blocking the road, one of the perks of driving in rural roads, it was narrow as a fucking straw.
Ben saw that it was no use shouting, he got out of the car and headed toward the nearest car which was of course the Range Rover, in front of the Range Rover came a guy whose was familiar, he was tall, chocolate skin and neatly curled hair and vivid handsome features.
Of all the things we expected, we wouldn't have thought that they could shoulder bump following with a brotherly hug.
"That guy is.."
"Kabera shema" Melissa filled in as we saw Ben going to help Shema to fix his car.
"As in the son of Kabera augustin?" Kirabo tried to collect her memories tossing them up and down trying to recollect where she knew him other than on TV.
"Yes, The one and only and the current president of Jabana textile" Melissa replied looking somehow excited.
"Oh, I see" she quickly scanned the other people in the cars, she could see familiar faces but she couldn't forget Chloe, she was like the best social media influencer in the whole country.
"Do you think they are also heading to Kivu?" Melissa asked failing to hide her excitement. Now, Melissa was thinking of this lustrous opportunity knocking on her door to get acquainted with the rich kids.
"I hope not" Kirabo said,her antisocial side squirming in the corner.
The guys finished working on the car and strolled slowly to Ben's car laughing heartily, Kirabo's eyes were fixated on Shema and he also returned her held her gaze.
Ben entered his car on the other side while Shema peeked his head in Melissa's window breaking our mini staring contest.
"This is one of my friends, Shema, I met him in itorero, he would have been a good soldier but he decided to continue family business, what a shame! " Ben exclaimed, Shema shook his head and smiled nevertheless.
Kirabo mentally committed suicide as she remembered that after this trip she would go in ingando or itorero, a compulsory national training project which aimed at teaching youngsters who just finished their highschool basic lesson of bow to defend themselves, history of Rwanda and teach them the concept of patriotism.
Now she needed to contaminate that 'lake allergy' she have came up with as an excuse last sunday when she didn't want to come here.
"Who is this?" He asked smiling down at Melissa, Kirabo rolled her eyes, Melissa always had that effect on boys.
Ben put a hand on her thigh as to clearly say 'fuck off, mine' but decided to voice it gently " Melissa, my girlfriend"
Shema raised his head past Melissa to catch Kirabo's gaze again.
"And her?"
Someone who is phobic of perfect people and please go away, Kirabo wanted to answer but bit back.
"My sister" Melissa replied, Kirabo rolled her eyes even, of course she would always be 'Melissa's little sister'.
"No name?" Shema asked again raising his eyebrows.
"Kirabo" she stretched out.
"Kirabo?" He tasted it on his tongue " like big flower? Hope you live up to your name and attract many bees" he said within a fit of chuckles from the three of them earning a sarcastic smile from Kirabo because the bees being spoken were boys and ironically she had been single for as long as she remembers.
"Maybe not as you live to your own, Shema?" She retorted smiling bitterly.
"We will see to that" He replied with a smile matching hers and stood straight and spoke to all of them now "See at you Kivu, hope you join us because I am hosting little beach party,I am looking forward to see you there"
Kirabo's heart dropped.
"No problem, we will be right behind you" Ben said with a convincing wave and started the car.
Shema looked at Kirabo once more, he mouth twitched into a smile which creeped her out, he winked and left for his car.
She knew three things now.
She hated how he radiated power
She was going to hate him.
She was going to have 'a hate relationship with him'.
Not the normal relationship you see in romcom movies.
Because she felt as if she caught a glimpse of his real self.
And this was going to be a shitty long day.
And one to remember.
