TWENTY SIX

The summer retreat concludes with a dispatch report about an event that made Duan Qin Wang and General Jiang nearly in between life and death. The Emperor made an order for Duan Qin Wang and Chen Qin Wang to return to the palace once the circumstances allowed them to receive an award.

Since then Jiang Xi Yu has been feeling restless and scared. The Imperial entourage back to the capital city was filled with sorrow. Yan Huang Fei joined their grand carriage to help comfort both Jing Gui Fei and Jiang Xi Yu. Once again, Jing Gui Fei fell ill. On the other hand, Jiang Xi Yu became quiet and lost in her mind for the whole journey back to the imperial city.

After returning back to Duan Wang Fu, Jiang Xi Yu wrote letters to her parents, asking for any report that they might get as Ming He and Qian Chang Xin did not return to her with any letter from Li Fei Long. As days passed, she ended up always waiting nervously inside Yonghe Gate hall. She kept on waiting for anyone to give her any report about Li Fei Long and General Jiang's well being.

Duan Wang Fu became restless.

Most of the servants started to believe that Duan Qin Wang might return to Duan Wang Fu lifeless. They pitied Duan Wang Fei who stayed most of the time at the main hall. Like a sculpture, sit there and keep on waiting.

Duan Wang Fei no longer cheerful. No more nagging the servants, no more experiment on making some new idea, no more selfcare on her own beauty. For about a month after Royal Entourage returned from the summer retreat, Duan Wang Fu stayed quiet.

The breeze suddenly entered the fu when Qian Chang Xin showed up on the front gate of Duan Wang Fu.

Jiang Xi Yu got up from her seat in Yonghe Gate hall even before Qian Chang Xin entered the main hall. She did not care about manners any longer. She was too scared that the trusted taijian was there to pass the worst report she could imagine.

"Greetings, wang fei. Nucai here..." Qian Chang Xin kneeled as soon as he entered the main hall. Jing Xi Yu already stood in the middle of the hall with Ru Ming, Ru Qing, Ding mama, and Xiao Gan Zi gonggong stood on their spots.

"Did you bring any letter from wang ye? How is he? Did he get full treatment from the best taiyi over there? Is he conscious? How can he get hurt? In which part of wang ye's body did Ashina Helu put harm?" Jiang Xi Yu railed with lots of questions.

She turned to the side, to ask Ding mama. "We should ask Master Gao to go there to help. We should think about how to send Master Gao there. Oh! I should go there too. We should plan thoroughly how to go there with Master Gao."

Jiang Xi Yu started to panic as many ideas suddenly stormed into her head. Her trusted people were also confused when they saw Jiang Xi Yu rumble with her own ideas on how to save Duan Qin Wang.

"Wang fei…" Qian Chang Xin tried to cut in.

Jiang Xi Yu turned her face back and looked at him. "What?!"

"Wang fei, wang ye and General Jiang are all fine. In fact, nucai is here to inform that Wang ye and Chen Qin Wang are just a week away before entering the capital." Qian Chang Xin gave his smile to Jiang Xi Yu.

Jiang Xi Yu fell in silence. She tried to process Qian Chang Xin's words. After a few minutes processing, she became completely relieved.

There was no way Li Fei Long who was strong and skillful would be easily harmed. Beside, there was her older brother. But then, her excitement turned into panic. "Are you sure?! Wang ye did not give you any letter to pass to me?"

Qian Chang Xin shook his head. "Wang ye just ordered me to inform the fu to accept his arrival in seven days time while Ming He got the order to convey this to The Emperor and Jing Gui fei."

"Jing Gui Fei must feel like what I feel by now." Jiang Xi Yu muttered.

Then she turned her back once again and called, " Xiao Gan Zi, let's organize the kitchen to prepare all kinds of wang ye's favorite food and snacks. Inform the taiyi to be prepared on the day wang ye arrive. Ask Master Gao to assist also. And, Ding mama can help inform the qieshi and prepare them to welcome wang ye."

"Wang fei…." Qian Chang Xin sounded hesitant to add some news. Jiang Xi Yu returned to look down on him once again.

"Is there anything else you need to tell me, Qian Chang Xin?!" Jiang Xi Yu asked in annoyance.

She hated this feeling like riding a roller coaster. She always prefered bad news first before good news and Qian Chang Xin made her feel up and down by speaking half and half. Jiang Xi Yu did not realize her own impatience and waited for Qian Chang Xin to continue his report.

"Along with Duan Qin Wang and Chen Qin Wang, King Kan Bo Zhou and his entourage also visited the capital. Wang ye has invited King Kan Bo Zhou and his Queen and Princess Duva to stay at Duan Wang Fu while visiting. Therefore, wang ye asked wang fei to be prepared." Qian Chang Xin answered her in a more careful way.

Jiang Xi Yu was stunned to hear the additional news. This would be the first time she became a host as a part of the Royal Family. She gazed at her trusted people. A King from the alliance states of the Empire will be staying at her place. She did not know how to start preparing.

The day has come.

The people lined up on the street to get a glimpse of the new hero of The Empire. Ever since the news about Duan Qin Wang and Chen Qin Wang arrived, the people started the celebration. That day, the crowd filled the front of the gate of Duan Wang Fu, to await the arrival of Duan Qin Wang.

The night before Jiang Xi Yu did not rest well. She was too excited to get to see the face of her husband. She woke up early and prepared her appearance in detail. She put on makeup and styled her hair while imagining how Li Fei Long would see her later. She put on the first bù yáo that Li Fei Long gave her. Hoping her husband would notice it.

When she was done with her own self care, she went to the front gate of the mansion. Against Ding mama's suggestion that her action was inappropriate since the common people would see her bare face, Jiang Xi Yu passed by Yu Wan ce fei and Zheng Yiniang who were waiting gracefully at the Yonghe Gate Hall.

Jiang Xi Yu stepped outside with the help of Ding mama. Duan Wang Fu's guards tighter securing the line at the front of the mansion. The crowd cheered immediately upon seeing the appearance of Duan Wang Fei.

The energy of the cheering delivered a chill into Jiang Xi Yu's heart. They chanted her title and praised her nonstop. The reputation that Li Fei Long earned with hard effort made the people, either rich or poor, gather in one unison.

She felt proud but at the same time she realized the responsibility she held as Duan Wang Fei was actually huge. All this time she was ignorant about the title she held.

With Ding mama on her left, Jiang Xi Yu whispered to her.

"Mama, you see over there. People from all levels of society are cheering for wang ye." She tilted her head and pointed to the sky. "The sky is bright and the weather is warm enough to welcome wang ye. Don't you think we are very much fortunate to have this blessing to reunite again with wang ye?!"

Feeling touched, Jiang Xi Yu looked back at the crowd. She wanted to share her moment of blessedness with the others who supported them.

"Duan Wang Fu will always be full of blessings." Ding mama agreed.

"Duan Wang Fu has more than enough basic needs to pass the coming winter. Xiao Gan Zi gonggong, what do you think if Duan Wang Fu announced distribution of basic needs for the less fortunate as a form of gratitude?" Jiang Xi Yu asked Xiao Gan Zi who stood right behind her.

The head house steward happily lowered his head. Jiang Xi Yu's way of asking showed that she recognizes the way Xiao Gan Zi manages the household.

Xiao Gan Zi came closer and conveyed his thoughts. "With our inventory status, Duan Wang Fu can distribute two jin of rice and soybeans for each person for a total of two hundred people. Nucai can announce the distribution for the homeless and needy people would begin after the welcoming celebration done and for nine joss stick long."

As approval, Jiang Xi Yo nodded her head.

After bowing to her, Xiao Gan Zi ran down to get closer to the people that were being guarded by Duan Wang Fu's house guards. The people stopped their cheering to listen to the announcement.

With his thin figure, Xiao Gan Zi announced the good will of Duan Wang Fu, causing Jiang Xi Yu to be amazed with his loud and steady voice. The cheers were more joyful than the previous one after Xiao Gan Zi finished with his announcement. He returned to his original spot, a few steps behind Jiang Xi Yu.

They cheered even getting wilder when from afar they all saw the banner with Duan Wang Fu's emblem approaching. The people started to make ways for the troops to approach the fu.

Jiang Xi Yu's heart beated faster. She cannot wait to see her husband that she missed dearly. In the front, along with the banner carrier, Lou Sheng led the way. His stern face combined with his full armor was the first Jiang Xi Yu noticed. She laughed at the stern General that was getting darker skin with some new scars on his face.

If Li Fei Long got scars like that on his face, Jiang Xi Yu already can think about which skincare might help to make sure to smooth the face skin back. As long as Li Fei Long was safe and sound next to her, she was happy already, she thought like that.

When the troops started to get closer, she finally saw Li Fei Long. Her husband was riding his horse gallantly. His skin got burned badly but he looked more mature, more dignified than before.

Without realizing it, Jiang Xi Yu was slowly stepping forward. Her eyes were locked with Li Fei Long's eyes. Her husband still has that eagle gaze at her. Jiang Xi Yu's eyes ran up and down to check Li Fei Long's well being. The full armor Li Fei Long wore, showed traces of his struggle at the war. Jiang Xi Yu returned her gaze to his eyes and smiled proudly. Riding calmly, Li Fei Long lifted up his chin arrogantly to show her that he was very much fine.

"Who is that pretty princess?"

"A hero brings back a princess from the desert?"

"Defeat the enemy and bring home the princess…"

The remark that entered Jiang Xi Yu's ear made her realize the one who rode behind Li Fei Long. No longer focussed on Li Fei Long, Jiang Xi Yu's eyes caught the appearance of a beautiful girl with exotic face and unfamiliar outfit.

The princess was waving behind Li Fei Long. Behind her was another entourage with different banners and few horse carriages.

Lou Sheng was the first who arrived at the front gate of Duan Wang Fu. Jiang Xi Yu did not realize Lou Sheng had already bowed in front of her because her mind was already filled with alot question. The crowd was busy talking about the possibility of who the hell was the princess and Jiang Xi Yu consumed the whispers and became jealous.

"Wang fei…" Ding mama reminded her by squeezing her hand.

Jiang Xi Yu turned to her left and right. She saw Lou Sheng awkwardly waiting for her to pardon him and Xiao Gan Zi who lowered his head even more deeply.

When she turned to look far behind Lou Sheng, Li Fei Long got stuck there in the crowd because she had not pardoned Lou Sheng to start organizing the troops so Li Fei Long and King Kan Bo Zhou could approach the front gate.

Jiang Xi Yu waved her hand. Then before Lou Sheng started to organize his troops and others, Jiang Xi Yu turned her body and basically tried to drag Ding mama back inside.

"Why is that princess riding openly behind wang ye? Isn't the rule for the royal maidens from noble families not to show their own face? Did he bring the princess home to be his concubine?" Jiang Xi Yu grumbled to Ding mama.

"Wang fei…. we still need to welcome wang ye and King Kan Bo Zhou properly." Ding mama reminded her slowly as she led Jiang Xi Yu to return to Yonghe Gate Halll.

Jiang Xi Yu ignored the two other concubines that already stood up from their seats. She stopped in front of the two main seats in the hall. She took a deep breath to clear her mind.

After she heard the noise from the front gate, Jiang Xi Yu turned around and arrogantly faced out. She needed to be ready. She tried her best to look confident and hide her jealousy behind.

With full armor, Li Fei Long stepped inside the main hall. Even though Jiang Xi Yu skipped a beat when she saw him approaching her, Jiang Xi Yu was too jealous to give a smile to Li Fei Long.

Li Fei Long did not come to her. He stopped right in the middle of the hall. His eyes were fixed on Jiang Xi Yu who cannot give him the same smile as before.

The atmosphere inside the main hall drastically turned awkward. King Kan followed Li Fei Long and stopped next to him. Jiang Xi Yu waited until the Queen and the Princess arrived and approached them.

Ding mama took the lead to give cue for the qie shi to give their greetings as Jiang Xi Yu still sat on her chair. Only after the two qie shi bowed down, Jiang Xi Yu followed the action.

"Duan Wang Fei is here to welcome Duan Qin Wang and King Kan." Jiang Xi Yu bent her knee and lowered her head. Before her knee was fully bent, Li Fei Long was already in front of her. In a flash he took a strong grip on her elbow and brought her to stand up again.

"Let me see your face." Li Fei Long whispered next to her ear.

Forgetting that she was worried and scared of losing him for the whole month alone, Jiang Xi Yu's mind was already possessed with jealousy. She wanked her elbow from his grip and lifted up her chin and gave the very best fake smile to King Kan and his Queen.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to welcome and host King Kan while visiting the capital. Do have a seat and enjoy our humble refreshment." Jiang Xi Yu stepped away from Li Fei Long and gave a huge wave.

Ding mama led the qie shi to take their leave. Xiao Gan Zi proved his efficiency and perfect manner with his preparation as the guests were very much pleased when they took their seats.

Before she herself took her own seat, Jiang Xi Yu took her chance to glanced viciously at her husband. Their eyes met and Jiang Xi Yu got more jealous when Li Fei Long opened the next conversation with a question.

"Did Zhenzhu hall have been prepared to cater Princess Duva's needs?" Li Fei Long asked out suddenly.

Jiang Xi Yu was shocked to hear that question. She tried her best to not show it to the others by helping herself with her tea cup.

Zhenzhu hall belonged to the late Qing Yiniang and was part of the "inner courtyard" where the qie shi resided. Did Li Fei Long purposely ask to underline his intention of letting King Kan and his family reside temporarily at Duan Wang Fu to take Princess Duva as his concubine?

Jiang Xi Yu did not answer the question. It was Xiao Gan Zhi who immediately bowed from the side and answered him.

"Since knowing that Duan Wang Fu will be hosting King Kan and his royal families, Duan Wang Fei gave us an order to give our best. The residence for the guests at the east side of the mansion had been meticulously prepared to meet the royal standard. Duan Wang Fei was very much concerned about the comfort of the royal members. Additional kitchen space and additional servants and staff were prepared in advance. If anything is lacking, Xiao Gan Zhi is ready to rectify."

King Kan smiled widely and formed his hands as a respect towards Duan Qin Wang and Duan Wang Fei. "This warm welcome touched my heart. I am sure I will be comfortable here as we will all be one family soon."

The statement made Jiang Xi Yu get even more angry. When she turned to Li Fei Long to get an explanation, her husband was already smiling at her and seemed to be enjoying her expression. If only Jiang Xi Yu could throw the hot tea cup right there at that moment to give a splash to Li Fei Long's wide smile.

She regretted that she once felt scared and anxious about losing him. She regretted believing that Li Fei Long might genuinely found love in her. She regretted putting her trust in every poetic word Li Fei Long has said and wrote for her.

The Emperor held the assembly that day after Duan Qin Wang and Chen Qin Wang completed their homecoming procession. Right after that both of the princes entered the palace to report their arrival, the assembly to welcome them started.

Li Qing Feng waited on the side with Li Jin Sheng and other members of the ministry. To his huge disappointment, Li Fei Long entered the assembly hall looking very much alive instead of being dead as it is rumored to have happened.

The trace of battle was obvious on his armor. His haggard face with some scars on his skin made his appearance heroic. Li Qing Feng took a glance at The Emperor and found The Emperor was proud of the eldest prince.

Li Jin Qiu was actually not far compared to Li Fei Long. The fourth prince became much more mature after returning from the campaign. Li Qing Feng never put Li Jin Qiu as his real competitor, the same as what he felt for Li Jin Sheng. One was unskilled, the other one had impure blood. Li Fei Long was always in the same league with him. Therefore, he put so much hate and competitive nature against him.

Now Li Fei Long returned with glory. Li Fei Long gained one huge point before him. Han Yao Ying has assured him that Li Fei Long would return to the capital as a death hero. But looking at what was happening there in the assembly hall, Li Qing Feng got furious.

The next figures who entered the assembly hall very much gave a shocking reaction. The members of the ministers gasped and murmured to each other.

The Great General Kong walked in along with King Bo Zhou. The Great General kneeled down before The Emperor. The legendary General wore his official armor but only with one hand attached.

"Long live the Emperor!" The four shouted in unison.

Only King Kan stayed up while the three others kneeled down. King Kan bowed and gave his own way to respect The Holy Emperor. Only after The Emperor pardoned them, they all stood back on their spot and waited for The Emperor to speak.

"The Grand Chancellor and The Minister of War and Defense, Duke of Lin, gave a report on Xi Empire's campaign against The Western Tujue on a daily basis. Zhen is very confident that you will bring total victory. Zhen acknowledged the hard effort of Duan Qin Wang, Chen Qin Wang, Great General Kong, General Jiang, Commander Bai and Commander Lin and the four Kings of the West Borders to hold the western states. To see some of you here today, bringing the winning victory and even bringing the important political prisoner, Ashina Helu. Zhen is delighted and proud."

The Emperor smiled at Li Fei Long. He gestured for Li Fei Long to get closer. "Fei Long, how is your condition?"

Li Fei Long gave his respect before answering The Emperor. "Fu Huang, the report about erchen's condition was grossly exaggerated."

Li Qing Feng could not hold his annoyance, he turned to check The Grand Chancellor's face. His father in law was listening solemnly. The old man did not show any trace of anger on his expression even though Li Fei Long did not die as they planned to. The Grand Chancellor was truly a demon.

"It was true that erchen was injured from the last war and was in the process of recuperating when that night Ashina Helu ran away with the help of traitors." Li Fei Long explained.

The Emperor frowned as Li Fei Long was telling something different from the report that The Emperor received. The members of the Ministries were surprised. They whispered to each other, commenting on who helped Ashina Helu escape that day.

"Traitors?!" The Emperor repeated in confusion. He gazed at Duke of Lin then returned his eyes to the four men in front of him.

"Shèngshàng, that day we learned that we have the greatest traitors." King Kan helped out. All eyes inside the assembly hall swifted focus on King Kan as he continued explaining what truly happened that day.

"Duan Qin Wang came out with a great strategy and personaly did a suicide mission that managed to ravage the opposite. Along with General Jiang, they captured Ashina Helu and created a ruckus among the tribes. We kept Ashina Helu as a high level prisoner but somehow Ashina Helu was able to slip out from the detention. Qu Wentai's people informed separately to Duan Qin Wang and General Jiang and gave wrong information on which direction the captives escaped. At the pointed area, Qu Wentai and his people have been waiting for them. Duan Qin Wang was the first who arrived and had to confront Qu Wentai alone before General Jiang reached and help him out."

"Qu Wentai?! King Qu!" The Emperor shouted in disbelief.

King Kan nodded his head and continued on. "Apparently Qu Wentai has turned to the other side. Great General Kong's confidant reported to us a little bit late. My partisans and I caught up with Duan Qin Wang and General Jiang who had been trapped there. Here is the report of Qu Wentai's treason to the Empire."

A taijian presented a wooden chest containing the head of Qu Wentai while another taijian presented a tray of a couple of report books.

"The Great General Kong returned to Gaochang as soon as possible to help us and in the way he clashed with the runaway Ashina Helu and Qu's supporters. The Great General managed to catch Ashina Helu back but unfortunately he lost an arm." King Kan continued the story.

The explanation caused a roar in the hall. The Great General has lost an arm means that The General can no longer be able to serve the Empire. It was a great loss.

"General Kong…" The Emperor looked at him with pitiful sight. "Zhen acknowledges the deed you have done for the Empire. We fought together along with The Late Emperor and The Grand Princess. In this last campaign, The Great General Kong led and also became a mentor for Duan Qin Wang and Chen Qin Wang."

General Kong bowed once again. This time he bowed until his forehead touched the floor of the assembly hall. After he straightened up his back, with his charismatic aura, General Kong stared at the floor.

"This subject only knows one thing, that the Kong family line lives and dies for the Xi Empire. One of my hands is gone does not mean that the Kong family line would stop serving this Empire. Bixia, this subject is submitting resignation. Let this subject return to Yānqí to enjoy retired life with wife and give opportunities for every Kong's son to continue serving the Empire."

Even though it was obvious for The Great General to resign from his post, this still gave the audience a shock. The Emperor took his glaze to where The Grand Chancellor was standing then returned to the people who stood in front of him.

"Did Han Hong Yuan return with all of you?" The Emperor asked.

"He decided to become Commander Bai's pupil." The Great General answered right away. "Han Hong Yuan suddenly showed interest in political strategy and wanted to learn from the best, Commander Bai. The young gentleman has the talent from both The Grand Chancellor and The Grand Princess. Eager to learn, he insisted on staying."

The Emperor laughed at the statement. His mood was delighted. "His eagerness came after he learned about General Kong's daughter."

The Emperor smiled and thought for a moment before continuing with his words. "Zhen accepted the resignation. The Great General Kong has been loyal to the Empire therefore zhen bestowed the title of Duke of Kong and officially granted the marriage degree for Han Hong Yuan to be wed with the Duke of Kong's daughter."

"Long live The Emperor!"

The Grand Chancellor rushed to kneeled down and shouted his gratitude along with The General. But it did not stop there.

The Emperor turned to King Kan with his generosity and did not stop there. King Kan was looking very obvious that he still had something to say.

"When Duan Qin Wang was on the line, King Kan was there to give support. For this, zhen is very much grateful."

King Kan lifted up his fist and gave his respect to The Emperor. "I only do what I have to do."

He turned to look at the two princes on his side and widely smiled at him. "Duan Qin Wang and Chen Qin Wang are very much talented."

King Kan returned his gaze back to The Emperor and continued to ask. "Actually, the reason why I came along with Duan Qin Wang, Chen Qin Wang, and General Kong is because I would like to ask The Emperor to grant me a wish."

The Emperor frowned at him. "What wish?"

"To grant a marriage degree for my beloved Princess Duva to the qin wang as a symbol of unity and loyalty."

Jiang Xi Yu Was not in the mood to entertain her guests at all. Who would be excited to become a welcoming host after she found out that the guest was intended to become her husband's concubine?!

After Li Fei Long and King Kan left the mansion, Jiang Xi Yu only spent a short time with the Queen of the North West state and The Princess. All along the conversation, Jiang Xi Yu could not hold herself to check out Princess Duva.

"She is fair, with green blueish eyes. Ohhhh… I do not know what color her eyes are but her eyes is exotic. Her body is slim. Did you notice she has a very thin waist?!" Jiang Xi Yu has not stopped complaining ever since she returned to her bed chamber. "How dare he even suggest letting the princess stay inside hou yuan!"

"Wang fei is also fair...and slim." Rushing to make Jiang Xi Yu's feelings turn better, Ru Ming tried to stop her anger.

"Wang ye was only being polite, beside it was just a small courtyard for a yiniang. It is not as comfortable as the guest's compound. Wang fei just misunderstood what was wang ye's intention." Ru Qing butted in.

Jiang Xi Yu could not stay still as her mind ran wild. In her imagination, at that moment Li Fei Long and King Kan were requesting a marriage degree to join the two households together. She walked around her chamber and took so many deep breaths.

If this was the time for Li Fei Long to get another woman then so be it. She had to be prepared, she gathered her feelings inside and looked around her chamber again.

"He might not stay here tonight." Jiang Xi Yu talked to herself.

She did not have any more excitement to dress up and doll up for her husband. Finally, she sat on the chair in the middle of the room. "I want to be alone. For supper, convey my deep apologies for the King, Queen and The Princess, I cannot be there and give my fake smile to them. I cannot…. I just can't."

"But...wang fei…" Ru Ming fell on her knees beside Jiang Xi Yu. Ru Qing took her loose hair and started to brush it softly.

"Wang fei, did you forget how worried you were before wang ye returned? How do you keep saying you missed wang ye dearly like you almost wanted to escape the summer retreat and follow wang ye to the desert? Have you forgotten all of this?"

Ru Ming took her hands and added, "We will help wang fei dress up beautifully until wang ye stun the moment wang fei shows up for supper. The princess is nothing compared to you, wang fei."

"Both of you are saying this to me because you are my people. Did you see how quiet and elegant that princess is?! She did not say a word since she arrived at the front. All she did was smile, waved at the people, then zipped her lips tight." Jiang Xi Yu copied the move sarcastically.

She widened her lips to show how that Princess smiled and waved like a pageant queen, making Ru Ming and Ru Qing giggled at her. Chu Hua entered the room with a silver basin with warm clean water and a clean towel draped over one arm. Jiang Xi Yu found her diligent and very obedient.

Ever since Chu Hua entered the mansion, Chu Hua only followed around Xiao Gan Zhi gonggong and Ding mama. She was still too afraid to socialize with other maids as if she was too afraid to get punished. Whatever happened at the previous fu, left her a huge trauma.

"Chu Hua, why are you here and serve wang fei? Haven't you been assigned by wang fei to assist Ding mama at the guest quarter?" Ru Ming stood up and took over the basin and put it next to the dressing table.
