Chapter Twenty

"Have you tried calling her?"

"Ten times."

"Text?"

"No point if she won't pick up the phone."

Kelly pauses. I'm nearly paralyzed on my bed. I can't think straight. Amy can't be gone. She has to be here, hiding. Somewhere.

I start to get up but Kelly holds me down. "We're not searching the house again, Kim."

"But--"

"Kim."

I'm a bit taken aback by Kelly's sternness. I thought she would help me...

"I need to find Amy," I say shakily.

"Kim, we have no idea where she is, we can't--"

I get my phone and try calling Amy again.

Kelly sighs. With exasperation, she asks, "Do you have her parents' numbers somewhere?"

I perk up. "I can look on the fridge," We've put all of our emergency numbers there. They could be there, but they live in San Diego, and there might be no point. I follow my finger down Amy's list. "Yes!"

I get my phone and start typing in Amy's mom's number. I hesitate as I almost press the green button to call her.

"What's wrong..." Kelly asks slowly.

"I-I don't know if I want to tell them."

"What do you mean?"

"I don't want to worry them..."

"But what if she just went over there." We both had our reasons.

"I... I don't want an entire police search looking for her. She'd hate that, no matter the situation. I can't do that to her."

Kelly pauses, then nods. "Okay."

I bury my face in my hands. "Where could she be, Kelly…"

I feel Kelly's hand brush my back. "I don't know, Kim."
