A part of Dr. Wells' team…
That's like every aspiring scientists' dream - MY dream.
I never knew a day like that would come. Having the privilege to get interviewed by Alax itself was great honor and pride but to be put on a team under the most respected, most influencial scientist in the laboratory - in the state even - is more than an honor that I wasn't expecting for myself.
"I'm not sure what I can do for this project, Dr. Wells but I'll do my best to let you and your team down."
Dr. Wells chuckled, patting me by the shoulder. "You can call me professor."
"Been a while since we had someone as polite and humble as her." Francis commented and everyone laughed at his remark.
"You're just furious because you weren't like that when you first came around." Katherine replied, making Francis furrow his brows.
This type of relationship they were showing me was overwhelming and rather strange for an outsider like me whose only met them this time. To think that they share an unspoken bond within the walls of Alax… To think that they don't solely focus on what lies beyond these walls…
I want it too.
I want to be a part of that something they were sharing.
Because not only did it feel amazing, it felt genuine.
"Why don't you both assist her to the testing lab?" Dr. Wells, instructed. "Show her around and introduce her to the project we're working on." The project... Already? "I'll come by the main after I finish my works."
"It's not like you're giving us any other choice, professor." Katherine replied. Katherine's way of communicating was a mix of, well, sarcasm and truth. I guess it wouldn't be as offensive as I thought it would be since they seem very close to each other.
The way they talk to each other was enough to say that they were comfortable with each other's presence. I believe it's a product of the amount of times they spent together down here. Who would have thought that me, a lowly peasant from the outskirts of Brisbein, would be invited in an honorable team?
"This way…" Francis started walking to lead the way.
"If you need anything, I'll be at my office." Dr. Wells said as we walked away from what seemed like the entrance of B5-A.
There were many other rooms inside. It was an entire laboratory itself. Dr. Wells had his own office in this area, they had their personal testing areas, personal office areas personal storage area, personal pantry – everything was personal and dedicated to this area.
"This is the main. It's where we usually do our projects together including Professor Wells. Except of course when we need to do individual work." Katherine explained as she pointed at the enormous space with different types of lab equipment.
"When I'm working on the write ups, the equations, all the thinking, I go to the research area. We keep all our findings there, all our written stuff." She paused. "Francis, when he starts working on things, he does it in the mechanical area. In there, we slowly build our project – one piece at a time then we gather all the pieces, all the data to the main for the dry runs."
Right now, we were in the mechanical area where a small bullet shaped technology was being held by two thin steel strings. It almost looked like it was a display from an alien-war museum but I'm guessing it's nothing close to that. I tried to guess what it was for but I couldn't think of anything but a bullet itself.
"That is the project."
I looked at both Francis and Katherine.
This bullet…
This is the project they were working on…
What does it do though?
"Mole Bullet."
Mole…
Bullet…
"It's a project requested by private investigators."
Project Investigators?
I didn't know Alax accepted request projects from certain types of people. I just assume that they do things and present it to the ones fitting for the project. I guess there's a lot more going on behind the scenes.
"It's supposed to hit a person seamlessly."
Seamlessly? Is that possible though?
"Once it hits the person, the built-in electrodes branch out inside the body to connect to the neurons and when we get access to the neurons, we can get into someone's brain by transmitting the data through frequency."
I was speechless.
These people working under here… are far more phenomenal than I ever imagined.
Coming up with these crazy projects and building them to life…
"The problem is that we can't get anything right. We can't get the bullet seamless and we can't get the electrodes to branch out without hitting other nerves." Katherine grunted in frustration.
To react that way only meant that they've been working on this project passionately.
"Have you tried reevaluating the equations for the branching?"
"Many times."
"What about the intensity of backfire?"
"Just enough speed to get deep into the skin."
"How is this used? Can it be used to shot from any part of the body?"
Katherine nodded. "It's reasonable that way."
"Maybe it's branching out crazily because the travel length of the electrodes is too long and it's overpowering the capacity of the chip you used. Judging by the looks of it, about one millimeter, give or take. They're private investigators, I assume they're trained for offensive combat meaning they're trained to use snipers which measures their accuracy in shooting range. If they can hit the bullet close to the head, we can limit the length to approximately 10 inches. By then, the chip would acquire less pressure and it won't shut down."
The two didn't reply anything.
"As for the seamless…" I paused. "The faster the speed, the less impact, right? If we apply that case, maybe it would seem more seamless like how you want it to be."
After I realized everything I babbled, I gulped in shame. I don't think I was supposed to say all that but it kind of just went off my head like a bomb. Did I somehow offended them because I criticized their work like it was my own?
Oh no.
"T-That's what I think, of course. I was just—"
"Katherine, modify the equation. Now."
