Chapter 29: Bridging the Divide

The next morning, as Riya descended the stairs, she scanned the dining room but found it empty. Her parents were nowhere to be seen, and she hesitated, unsure whether to inquire about their whereabouts. Then, remembering her mother's plans to cook for themselves, she held her tongue.

Noticing Riya's arrival, Mr. Kim spoke up, breaking the silence. "Oh, look, Riya has come," he remarked warmly, gesturing for her to join them at the table.

As she took her seat, Riya was surprised to find that today's dishes were all Indian. Her eyebrows shot up in astonishment, and Mrs. Kim addressed her with a gentle smile. "After we found out that you love Indian food, we hired an Indian cuisine chef so you can enjoy all types of Indian dishes here," she explained kindly.

Riya pursed her lips, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She struggled to come to terms with the sudden presence of these new parents in her life. "If only I had lived here from the start, things might be different," she thought to herself. Memories of her mother's struggles and sacrifices flooded her mind, and she clenched her fists, feeling a surge of anger and resentment.

Miya, being younger, didn't remember those difficult times as clearly, but she understood enough to empathize with her mother's pain. She remembered the days when their grandmother mistreated their mother, withholding food from her while their father ate heartily. The memory still stung, and Riya couldn't forgive her father for it.

"Riya?" Mrs. Kim's voice interrupted her thoughts, bringing her back to the present. Riya blinked, meeting Mrs. Kim's gaze, and forced a nod. "Yes, the food is good," she replied, offering a small smile.

"I'm glad you like it," Mrs. Kim said, her eyes filled with understanding.

After lunch, Riya made a move to head to the side villa, but Mr. and Mrs. Kim stopped her, indicating that they wanted to talk.

In the living room, Mr. Kim took a deep breath before speaking. "We want to have a talk with you for a while," he began, his gaze unwavering as he met Riya's eyes. "I know it's difficult for you to accept us as your parents, but we truly wish to get to know you better and become a part of your world from now on."

"We've missed out on so much of your life, and we want to make it up to you if you'll allow us," Mrs. Kim added, her voice gentle and sincere. "We can't change the past, but we hope we can build a family together from now on."
