The Songs Only I Hear

!!ANNOUNCEMENT!! - I will have slightly worse upload schedule during the summer, due to a lot of vacations my family and I have planed. I'm only human, I need my breaks too! Thank you for understanding, and to those who are following this series, please don't be alarmed when I miss a few upload dates. My approximate timing will probably slow, to every 4 - 7 days. I know. It's bad. This however, is the only way I can post, while spending time with my family. I will go back to regular uploads by the end of the summer. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Being blind is just how Lucus sees the world. Nothing seems to be wrong with this. After growing up in an orphanage, he takes his first steps into a real school when he enters high school. Making friends, and changing the world. They both seem to be equally hard. While he might not be able to see, the world feels more blind to him, than he is to them. Gonna be really honest here. I don't have a great upload schedule. I'm a bit too lazy for that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Uploads every 2 - 3 days. Sometimes I might do 2 at a time if I'm feeling productive. I wish I could say I'm going to make this the best book you'll ever read, but I'm still very amateur. Give me a chance, however, and I promise to surprise you. This is a tale of friendship, a bit of romance, overcoming life's obstacles, and working hard to surpass them. Join Lucus, Ben, and Allicia in their quest to find, or make, a life of their own. Thank you for reading, hope you enjoy. ; )

Go Crying Back

The words echoed in the halls. The murmurs in the crowd were mixed. Most of the students were against this accusation. However a small portion agreed. This was rule number one. The sad thing about the natural course of the world, is no matter how many good people can say something, a single bad one can outweigh them tenfold. You might find somebody mildly annoying at most, and that is true for most people, however some situations don't show somebody's true nature. Sadly, there is one undeniable fact, and that is that there are people with no morals, or people who place themselves at the sun and others on the ground. People like this can be needlessly mean and bully others, however, others only really show who they are when the situation calls for it. Never before witnessing somebody accomplish something amazing when you haven't gotten within a hundred miles is a heartbreaking thing to people like this. They take this as an insult rather than a cause for celebration. Others are in the middle and it makes you normal, if that even is a word. Not only did this person seem to be insulting the very nature of the bully, but they were from the area reserved in his mind, for the lowest of the low. Down in the depths of the cave. It was as if a monster had emerged from the depths of a forgotten cave, and was now clawing its way tooth and nail to the sky for the sole purpose of destroying it.

Lucus didn't understand this law of life. Living in what others saw as the cave, he saw almost no light from the surface, be it fire or sunlight. He cleared his throat just as all important people with something to say do, and began to answer.

The principal did nothing. Instead, he smiled knowingly when Lucus began to speak.

"Just because you haven't saved someone from a fire, doesn't mean I cheated. How could I have? Simply pretended to be blind for five months?" Stunned.

Now this is where rule number two presents itself. Bullies are quite dumb. This answer contained 2 of the things that he could not shield against. Bravery, which is the simple fact of fighting back when nobody ever had, and logic. Logic could only be refuted by the dumbest of the dumb, however if you state it this powerfully, through the bravery in your voice and mind, you can make it so even the dumbest can't refuse this fact. Of course they will still fight back. Would you not fight for air if you were drowning? Does a mouse persist struggling when caught by a mouse? Every human has an instinct they revert back to when in trouble. This was trouble. Now being called out, they were having to suffer consequences. They were now at the gaze of three of the world's most elite. A place always wondering just how much of their parents' money it took to get this idiot of a child into such a school. They would surely face some sort of reprimanding for this. They were also embarrassed. It doesn't take Lucus's hearing to hear the whispers coming from every direction. The majority of the crowd of support is now talking. Things these bullies try hard to believe aren't true, while they are. Any support they had before is gone. If they didn't yell, they weren't being yelled at. Better him than me.

"Chill, man. You don't have to be so touchy." Rule number three. The blame game, is their favorite game. People in the crowd began to ooooh. The thing about this is that it doesn't matter who was right or wrong. It's just a show, and that's all they can see it as. The oos were everywhere. No one was going to pick out the crowd. This is called herd behavior by scientists. A crowd can influence your thoughts and actions to fit together. Because one person showed some sort of interest in this reply, everyone did. Poor Lucus could not understand this, but instead they sounded like everyone was against him. However, this is how he had always lived his life. Against the world. This was nothing. Nothing against everyone and even life itself. That's what he told himself. Fell off the swings? Nothing compared to the world. Got a bad grade? So what? He's fought the world. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. No matter how rock hard words can be, they are only as big as you allow them to be. If you see them as insignificant, you have a speck of dust, but if you let it get to you, it can become a boulder.

"You know you're technically fighting a blind guy right? Even so, all you have to show for yourself is a blame shift." So now he's the bad guy. Fighting the guy you always felt was so insignificant. "If I'm so insignificant, why bother?" His own logic. He broke the cave. There was no place for him now. No place to put him. His mental image was flawed. Even he could see that. The bully could hear the whispers now too. Support only for Lucus. And hatred for him. The whispers grew louder. Louder and louder still. All in his head

"SHUT UP! Go crying back to whatever #$%@* screwed you up so bad!" Boom. Nail in his coffin. No school wants its students swearing. Especially not to the hero of the day. Especially not to the blind guy. The teacher grabbed his arm and pulled him outside. When the door slammed shut you could hear muffled protest from him. The room was silent for a moment, before the audience broke out into an applause. All for Lucus. The boy who was blind and the hero from the fire now beat the bully in word. The principal smiled and announced the award. Lucus jumped a bit, forgetting he was there. Ben snapped a picture. This, surely was a sign for good things to come.

Ouch.
