"I'll give you to the count of three to get out of that vampire," I warned. "One!"

Eddie's fingers curled more, making it look as if he were summoning energy from the earth. Oh damn, was that what he was doing?

Next to me, the demon shifted, hardly a movement at all.

"Two!" Blood pounded in my ears.

"Lovelylovelylovelylovely," Eddie said. "Lovely lake."

The Lake of Truths? What was so important about this stupid lake?

The demon's arm brushed mine. A signal? A signal for what? I guessed I was about to find out.

The next few moments were crucial. No room for fuck-ups. Not with Eddie on the line. I just wouldn't aim for the heart.

I sucked in a breath, steeling myself for what came next. "Three!"
