The Seven Winged Butterfly

« Is your life really that boring? ». « I mean, I wouldn’t say that it’s boring. It’s just…normal. And the next day it starts again ». … « Sometimes I wonder how would it be like to live an adventurous life, like the characters of those novels…to really have an extraordinary life… ». ... « A superpower? Would you use it to enjoy the pleasures of life? Would you try conquering fame and power? Would you create a better world for those around you? Now, what if you realized that you are not the only one gifted with a unique power. That there are six more like you, but whose powers and intentions you ignore completely. What would you do then? Is it safe to just keep living your life as you please? Would you track them down to make sure that they are peaceful? Or would you hunt them to make sure that you are the only "special" one in the world? That mysterious countdown that keeps ticking certainly doesn't help.

LORENZ

"De Jem", the upscale cocktail bar where they had spent the previous night (and where apparently Lorenz was shot), was not exactly close to their house. When they went there last night they had taken the bus to save money, considering that the bar itself was pretty expensive, which had taken about forty-five minutes to get there. But with a taxi it would have taken about twenty minutes.

« So…how does it work exactly? » Daniel whispered to his friend, while in the back of the taxi. The taxi driver had his headphones on and was speaking to someone on the phone, but when talking about supernatural powers, caution was never too much.

« Do you know how some language theories state that thoughts are really just the precursor of speech?...Apparently not » once again Lorenz answered himself.

« Basically, the only difference between a thought and a sentence is that you vocalize it with your mouth. What I hear is your thoughts as if you were speaking them. With your exact same voice. Some are louder and others are softer, I think it has to do with your emotions » explained the blond one.

« Ok but what about emotions? Or images and thoughts that are not really sentences? And a few minutes ago you said you actually looked into my memories right? » his friend was understandably confused.

« Yeah, well that part is a little bit more complicated. I really don't know how to explain it…but the concept is pretty much the same. I can feel the emotions either in the tone of your thoughts or when they are really strong I can actually feel them myself, to a certain extent…images, sounds and memories are even weirder. For those apparently I have to look someone in the eyes… » he said, looking at the back of the head of the taxi driver, still busy in his conversation.

«For example I can't do it with him. I can hear his thoughts and what he's not saying to his friends, but I cannot actually "look" into his mind…but if I look in your eyes… » he turned towards his friend « I can see images, sounds and all other kind of stuff related to your thoughts…and I can look into your memories. It's hard to explain, but it's like looking into my own mind. I can search for something specific or try to remember a feeling or a place and see what memories come up. It's as if your memories were also mine. » that concluded the explanation, leaving Daniel trying to wrap his brains around what he just heard. All in all though, it didn't sound so complicated.

"So right now you are hearing me as if I were speaking?" he thought, without making a sound. The friend nodded in response.

"That is… "« … so cool! » apparently, he couldn't hold it in.

Lorenz could see a million questions forming in his friend's mind, to which he didn't really had neither the time nor the will to answer. Fortunately, they had arrived at their destination.

What neither of them had thought, despite mind reading abilities and all, is that a nightlife local is not usually open at 10 a.m.

« Shit! » they both said, disappointed.

« I guess we should just get back home. We'll come back when they open » proposed Daniel.

« No. I am not going away from here until I get answers » Lorenz had a strict look on his face. He knew that the anxiety would make him insane if he got back home. Daniel seemed to pick up on that.

« Fine…let's just stay at a nearby café until someone comes to open ».

Lorenz agreed, silently.
