Chapter 82

Gene and I were tied together with our backs against each other. They locked us in a dim basement in the same building. We were supposed to wait there until they hand us over to the police.

"So you were Auriel all along, huh?" I finally broke the silence.

"Are you mad at me, Beatrice?"

"Not really. Just really surprised. To think I was with you all this time and never realized it. I thought I knew you so well. It turns out, I don't."

"Beatrice..." He paused. "I'm sorry I never told you."

"It's alright. I sort of understand why you would keep this from me."

"I knew you would do something about it if I did. I didn't want you wrapped up into this mess."

"You're right. I probably would have done something."

"I kept it from you...yet here you are. Tied up with me."

"Fate is indeed strange."

"Yup."

"What do we do now?"

He sighed. "I don't know."

"In any case, we really need to escape before we're wrongly sentenced to prison."
