 "You two know each other?" Phillip's tone rose by half an octave, surprised too.

 "Pere, he saved me who almost fell into the river."

 It's good that he's telling the truth. I don't need to explain the abnormal behavior he did last time to Phillip, who this girl is who I don't know.

 "Whoa, besides being smart, you're really kind, Jace." Phillip chuckled as he patted my shoulder repeatedly. "This is my stepdaughter. My wife's only child from her ex-husband."

 Oh. Explain the difference between his last name and Phillip's last name. His words in the use of the word kind really tickled my stomach.
