Chapter 10

White. Zoey opened her eyes to see a white ceiling, a white room, and white sheets. Although her hands were stained, the redness that stained them was… nice. Zoey wiggles her finger to get some sort of clarity of her body. She was… alive? How? She stabbed herself. Her thoughts of the situation were interrupted by the sound of the door opening.

"Mrs. Williams?" Zoey nodded in response. The doctor continued to go over the general health stuff like blood pressure, weight, heartbeat, etc. He also told her that a concussion was to be expected. As he went on, Zoey couldn't help, but think about Mrs. Kingiver. Was she alright? Or was her written will getting put out into action?

"Is Barbra okay?" Her voice was hitched to match her dry mouth. The doctor first gave a confused look then eyes flashed a sense of sorrow.

"I," He placed his hand upon her sheeted leg. "I'm sorry." Zoey knew what the soft words meant.

"But-," drops of water began to swell in her eyes as she tried to look for a reason to protest. She killed Barbra? How? Well, she knows how. "But she was just.."

"Don't worry, the police are trying hard to find who did this?" The man's words snatched the once saddened woman from her woes.

"What?"

"Yeah," The doctor sorted through some paper on his clipboard before speaking once more. "Police report a witness sighting a man leaving your house last night." Zoey didn't know whether to cry in fear or sigh in relief. Someone else was in the house? Was it the ghost? So there wasn't one after all. She felt a twinge of relief knowing that she wouldn't be placed as a murderer, but knowing that there was someone, something taking that burden was terrible. She placed her hand on the wrapped bandages on her head. They were pretty tight but needed to stop the blood. The wraps around her waist felt the same as well.

"Do you know when I'll be able to leave?" Her mouth was still dry and her tongue felt like sandpaper as she spoke. She wanted to leave. Leave this hospital, leave this town, leave everything behind. Just like before, but less… stressful. Her heart ached as she realized. I can't leave. I'm forever trapped here. Here to stay… here to rot. The doctor felt the wave of sorrow that manifested in this room and gave a short, unintelligible answer before leaving. Before leaving her alone. Alone with the white, painted, walls. She looked around for something she could do. She could pick up her phone, but she'd have no one to call. That seemed the only thing Mrs. Kingiver was good for. Still bored, she picked up her phone to find something relevant to security.
