Alex knew that his trip to the lightwell town had attracted the attention of many people, and he had intended to leave, just like Dr. Fauci, in case of danger. Alvis had similar thoughts, but he didn't say anything when Alex spoke to him earlier. Instead, he waved his hand and gave Alex three hundred gold pounds, which was more than half of Alvis's personal funds.
Alvis had a feeling that Alex was planning to leave, but he was surprised and thrilled when he heard that Alex's carriage had returned. However, when he saw Alex's gloomy expression, he quickly came down to the castle to greet him and hugged him. After patting Alex on the shoulder, Alvis looked puzzled and said, "My brother, you shouldn't have come back!"
Alex remained silent, feeling a scowl form on his face as he saw the exhaustion and deep misery in Alvis's eyes. Whatever had happened in less than two days had made Alvis feel desperate. When Alex returned to Goldert Castle after a few days, he noticed that the atmosphere in the entire castle was sober. Something had happened the previous day, not long after Alex left, and it seemed as if time had been reset to the morning before.
Ginny Weir, a senior maid at Goldert Castle, was in charge of the back kitchen in particular. She had led two strong servants to the farm on the outskirts of the town to buy food for the kitchen. Due to the recent strange occurrences and the haunting of the Tower of Yin Spirits, people in PARSLOV were frightened and the market was extremely slow. For safety reasons, Goldert Castle now purchased its food directly from the farm outside the city rather than going through the market. Ginny Weir was very capable, and nothing happened when she went to buy food. However, on the way back, a ragged homeless man rushed out of a side alley as they approached an intersection.
This type of homeless person is common in PARSLOV City. They are impoverished peasants who have lost their land and are forced to seek a living in the city. If they have no other skills, they can only become beggars. The homeless man in this case moved quickly, with a dazed expression, as if he were sleepwalking, and he didn't even look around to see if there were carriages or other pedestrians on the road.
The Goldert family's coachman was accustomed to being in charge, and he didn't want to give way when he saw someone approaching. No one dared to ram the Golderts' carriage, so both sides ended up colliding. Although the horse pulling the carriage made a "slippery" sound, the experienced coachman was able to quickly pull on the reins and stop the carriage in the middle of the road. Ginny Weir, who was in the back of the carriage, almost fell into the potato basket when the carriage stopped suddenly. She was angry to have been jostled without cause and demanded fiercely, "What's the matter? Are you all right driver?"
"This person rushed out, Sister Ginny, and I tried to avoid him," the driver said, expressing his frustration and glaring at the homeless man who had been knocked to the ground. However, he was surprised to see that the homeless man was bleeding from his mouth and nose, twitching his hands and feet, and seemed to be on the verge of death. If it had just been a minor injury, the coachman would have been fine, but if he had killed someone, even if the carriage belonged to the Viscount, he would not have been able to escape punishment.
He quickly got out of the carriage to check on the homeless man. At the same time, Ginny Weir emerged from the carriage and saw the tramp lying on the ground. She grimaced, knowing that she would not be able to explain why she had killed someone. She quickly extended her fingers and took a breath to check if the homeless man was still alive.
However, she was startled when the homeless man suddenly sat up as she approached, with protruding cheekbones under his unkempt hair, staring abnormally, as if he was trying to tear the corners of his eyes, and making a hoarse, muffled voice, "It's crazy! It is strange. Yes! We must all die; no one can, cannot survive..."
Ginny was shocked and immediately hid behind a rock, but the tramp grabbed the hem of her skirt and wouldn't let go. She shouted in terror. The strong servant was nearby and immediately came over, waving the homeless man's skinny hand, dragging him to the side of the road, and throwing him onto the ground, disgustedly slapping his hands.
The homeless man did not struggle, just repeating those words with a dull expression, but his gaze was always fixed on Ginny. Ginny felt uneasy being glared at by him, and she had the courage to urge the two servants to teach this crazy man a lesson. However, she was afraid that the other party would be too weak and didn't want to accidentally kill someone, so she held back and decided not to interfere. Instead, she avoided looking at the homeless man, hurried back to the carriage, and drove away.
If it had just been a minor incident, it would have been insignificant. However, last night, almost as Alex was about to commit massacre with his group, a piercing cry sounded from the small building next to Goldert Castle where the servants lived. A terrified servant shouted shrilly, trying to push away his bed mate, who was biting his neck furiously.
It was the insane servant who had gone shopping with Ginny Weir earlier in the day who was causing the commotion. His face was blue, his eyes were vacant, and he had bitten off a piece of meat from his poor roommate's neck, leaving his mouth bloodied. He was still munching as the noise and screaming from the next room, where the second footman lived, grew louder.
Ginny was allowed to live on the ground floor of the castle because she was in charge of the kitchen. At that moment, she woke up to see a dirty, hunched man standing by her bed, yelling at a very high volume. Ginny sat up and kicked the man with her knees. The man did not dodge or counterattack, but allowed Ginny to scream and fight fiercely.
The commotion quickly alerted the night watch guards. When two armed guards kicked open the door and broke in, the homeless man who had arrived out of nowhere was beaten to the ground. One of the guards went to inspect and was shocked to find that this man had died! Ginny was still in shock, clinging to the comforter and gasping for air. She became even paler and more horrified when she realized that the homeless man had died.
It was unimaginable that a weak woman like her, who had no martial arts training, could have the ability to kill a man with her bare hands. However, after learning about the incident, Viscount Ashby was not concerned about the death of the person, but rather how that person was able to enter the castle through the heavily fortified defences.
