Chapter 42: A Not So Public Laison

Clara’s POV

I knew I couldn’t avoid them for long, not after what must have been witnessed by most of society only the night before.

I steadied myself, fixing my hair in the mirror in my sitting room at Cavendash Manor while my mother and sister made their way through the house in my direction.

I could imagine what Mother would say. That I had ruined myself and the family, that Anabel’s prospects for marriage were essentially zero, that I would never be able to remarry, never have a penny to my name and live in lonely squalor.

She would probably insist that I marry Von Lucius if I were honest with her about the situation, which she would probably think was a much better option compared to the latter.

But something had changed since my night with Randall. I was different, stronger, more assured.

I had gotten what I always wanted, even if only for the night. I couldn’t possibly live the rest of life in misery.
