While tidying up the clothes Ruan Jiaojiao had taken off and the washbasin she had used after her bath in the house, the sight of the soaked and somewhat rotten peace charm on the small stool rekindled her anger. She could not contain her fury and turned to go to the back courtyard, where she fiercely pulled off several bamboo strips from the broom and stormed to the front yard.
Pointing at the boys, she asked, "Do you remember what I've been telling you these past few days?"
The boys, who had been murmuring among themselves about something, fell silent out of fear when they saw the Ruanlin Family matriarch coming with bamboo strips, and they stammered out their replies.
"Not to go to the riverside."
"Not to go near the water."
"Not to play in the water."
"Very good," the Ruanlin Family matriarch sneered. "I thought you hadn't heard me, but it seems you all did. You just took my words for nothing more than wind past your ears, didn't you?"
