Chapter 22

“Always the smartass.”

“Well, you started it,” he protested.

“Children,” Delilah admonished. “Behave. He’s right though, Maeve. No hidden art and we’re back to square one.” When Maeve asked, Delilah told her about their plan to ‘rescue’ some of the artwork and then ransom it back to Vicario, “As long as he comes alone. Then Edan can take him out.”

“For drinks and dinner?” Maeve asked, and then apologized when everyone groaned.

“Is that a cemetery?” Gideon asked suddenly.

“Sure is. St. Louis Number One,” Edan told him. “It’s been around since the late seventeen hundreds. The voodoo princess Marie Laveau is purported to be buried there.”

“It looks like it’s filled with mausoleums, not graves,” Gideon said as he peered at what he could see of the place.

“We call them vaults,” Maeve said. “Since the water table is so high in New Orleans, the graves fill with water whenever there’s a flood, just like basements, so bodies are put in the vaults, instead.”
