Joint families

Alex and Levi paced outside Alex’s front door. They paced and paced and paced.

‘How could they not tell us.’ Alex said.

‘Is there gonna be a wedding?’ Levi said.

‘Am I gonna change my last name to Roberts?’ Alex said.

’Are we gonna move house?’ Levi said.

’Should we tell the others?’ Alex said.

’What‘s the wedding cake gonna look like?’ Levi said.

Alex stopped pacing and looked at Levi. ‘Okay you are not thinking about wedding cake right now.’

’What, I didn’t have time to grab a snack after school because I had to rush over here.’ He said.

’Okaaayyy,’ Alex said ‘back to my question should we tell the others.’

Levi was silent.

’Should we confront them?’

More silence.

’Levi!! Hello!’ Alex yelled.

’I think we should stop talking.’ He said.

’Why?’

’Because our parents are right behind you.’

Alex turned around slowly to see her mum and Levi’s dad standing there.

‘Kids, get your siblings down here, we have something to tell you all.’ Mr Roberts said.

All 10 siblings sat down in the living room waiting for what the parents were gonna say.

Levi’s dad grabbed Alex’s mum’s hand. They smiles sweetly at each other then they turned to look at the siblings.

’Woah, why are they doing that, why is that happening?’ Jake, one of Alex’s brothers, said.

’Because we’re together.’ Alex’s Mum said

’Together like we’re all in this room together. Or together like... boyfriend and girlfriend together?’ Maya, Levi’s oldest sister said.

‘Second one dear.’ Levi’s dad said.

All ten of them were silent. Alex got up and said, ‘I for one think this is a great idea.’ She walked over to the two parents and hugged them both.

Levi got up and did the same. ‘Me too.’ He said.

’So,’ Alex said wiggling her eyebrows at the parents. ‘Is there gonna be a wedding?’

Alex’s mum squealed and got up abruptly. ‘Yes! He proposed to me last week!’

Alex turned towards Mr Roberts gaping. ‘No way.’

‘Yes way.’ He said.

’Nice one.’ She said high fiving him.

’Soooo, when’s the wedding?’ Levi asked.

’The 25th of August.’ Mr Roberts said.

’Yikes.’ Alex said ‘That’s really soon, are you sure you can get everything done in time?’

‘Alex what do I do for a living.’ Her mum said.

’Well you’re a wedding planner...’

‘That’s right she is! This wedding is gonna be a breeze and not to mention our 10 wonderful children who’ll help us out.’ Mr Roberts said smiling hugely.

’I’ll definitely help when we reach the summer holidays on July 15th.’ Levi said.

’Oh yeah, definitely!’ Alex agreed.

The two of them turned towards the rest of their siblings.

‘Are guys gonna say anything, or are you gonna keep gawking.’ Levi said.

’Well if you guys would let us get a word in we would’ve said something ages ago.’ Justin said smirking and gesturing to Alex and Levi.

Lola, Tia, Jessie, Jake, Justin and Max stood up and ran to hug their parents.

‘I think that we can all agree that this is the most awesome thing to have happened ever.’ Max said

’Totally agree.’ Lola said as she turned to her sisters and Alex. ‘We’re gonna be bridesmaids!’ She squealed.

While the happiness continued the eldest siblings sat quietly.

’Are you sure you guys have thought this through, this all seems a bit sudden.’ Leon said.

’I’m with Leon on this one,’ Maya said. ‘This just kinda feels like a way to quickly move on...’

Alex’s mum looked at Levi’s dad. She went over and kneeled next to Maya and he went over and kneeled next to Leon.

’Guys this is in no way an excuse to move on from your mother.’ Alex’s mum said.

‘And your father, we really do love each other.’ Levi’s dad said.

’Really?’ Leon said. ‘Really.’ Both parents said.

’Okay but we just had to make sure you know, I don’t want anyone to get hurt.’ Maya said.

‘Are we all good now guys?’ Levi asked. ‘Yes we’re all good.’ Leon said.

’Oh my goodness, I’m gonna have sisters!!’ Alex said.

’You’re gonna have sisters!’ All of Levi’s sisters said, crowding Alex into a group hug.

The next day Alex and Levi walked into their form room looking immensely happy.

‘Oh glad to see you to are feeling better.’ Kylie said smiling.

’So is this how it normally happens, their just happy the next day?’ Mason asked

’Yeah... but they don’t normally look this happy. It’s kinda weird.’ Kylie said.

Alex and Levi plopped down in their seats opposite Mason and Kylie.

’Guys he have news!’ Alex said.

’Totally awesome news that will change our lives... forever.’ Levi said cryptically.

Alex and Levi looked at each other and smiled.

’Okay... so do you wanna tell us?’ Kylie said.

‘Lets just say I might become Miss Alexandra Roberts.’ Alex said.

Kylie’s jaw dropped and her eyes widened. Mason looked shocked.

’You guys are getting married?!’ Kylie asked, shocked.

’What! No!’ Alex said

’Why would you think that!’ Levi said.

’Well if it’s not that, then what is it?’ Mason asked, looking slightly relieved.

’Our parents are getting married!’ They both said at the same time.

Kylie and Mason gasped!

‘No way!’ Mason said.

’Yes way!’ Alex squealed.

’Oh my Alex, you’re squealing.’ Mrs Lucas said walking into the class room.

‘You must be really happy.’

’I am!!’ Alex squealed again. And again. And again.

’Do you want to take a moment outside while Levi tells me what’s happening?’ Mrs Lucas said.

‘No I’m fine.’ Alex said, and then she squealed again.

Mason, Kylie, Levi and Mrs Lucas looked at her.

’Okay, I’ll go.’ She said.

’Okay, Levi what’s happening?’

’Our parents are getting hitched!’ Levi said.

Mrs Lucas gasped, clapped her hands and squealed.

‘Oh no don’t start too Mrs.’ Kylie said smiling.

’Sorry, I guess I should compose myself, we are in school and I am a teacher after all.’ She said smoothing down her skirt.

‘But Amy and Jason getting married that’s so exciting!!’

’Ooooh who’s Jason.’ Veronica piped up from her seat. ‘He sounds cute!’

At this point Alex walked back into the classroom. She heard what Veronica had said and made a disgusted face.

’Jason is Levi’s dad you weirdo.’ She said.

’Oh... ewww... wait.’ She said.

’Amy is your mum, and Jason is your dad... marriage?’ Veronica thought aloud, connecting the dots.

She finally realised. ‘There are gonna be 10 of you now!’

‘Oh wow Veronica actually got something right.’ Alex said slow clapping.

‘Don’t paxtonise me Alex.’ Veronica said rolling her eyes.

’Don’t... what?’ Alex said, looking genuinely confused.

’You know, when you try and make me feel small, it’s really paxtonising.’ She said a matter of factly.

’No mate, I think you mean patronising.’ Levi said.

’No Levi.’ Veronica sneered. ‘Patronising is when you blow someone up.’ She said rolling her eyes.

’No Veronica.’ Mason said. ‘That’s pulverising.’

‘Nooo,’ Veronica said. ‘Pulverising is when-‘

’Okay if we let her continue we’ll be hear all day.’ Kylie said grinning.

Veronica scowled. ‘I hate you all.’
