Melina and Michael walked to the huge brick building, students flocking around everywhere. Melina looked at her surroundings, in awe with what she saw. The school beyond her expectations, looking as though it was from a fantasy world.
The walkway leading up to the building had lash, green grass with wooden benches scattered all around. Trees covered the benches providing shade, with a few having flowers growing under the tree too.
The building meanwhile was three stories tall and had dozens of arch shaped windows. The stairway leading to the entrance of the building had a statue of a griffin on each side.
Huge, wooden doors were wide open as Melina and other students entered inside the building. Melina followed Michael as he led her to the reception's office. As they walked, Melina saw that while everything looked better, it somehow still reminded her of her old high school.
Just cleaner and more expensive looking…
Once at the reception, Michael quickly greeted a beautiful looking woman, who looked to be in her twenties, sitting at the front desk. She had bronze skin, bright green eyes and dirty blond hair with streaks of green in it.
However, what surprised Melina was her ears and hands. She had pointed ears and her fingertips were green, like she had been working hard in a garden.
"Ms. Grayson, this is Melina Rana, the new transfer student." Michael said, breaking Melina's thoughts at the sound of her name being mentioned.
"Ah yes… The famous Rana daughter." Ms. Grayson smiled, showing sharp, white teeth. "It's nice to meet you. I have you in Room 401 for your homeroom."
She picked up a piece of paper and handed it to Melina. She then looked behind her and yelled, "Alice, come here for a second!"
A small girl with red pixie hair and amber eyes immediately appeared from behind Ms. Grayson. Melina saw she wore a red blazer with a lion badge on it, making her soon realize that the light skinned girl in front of her was a demon like her.
"Yes, Ms. Grayson?" Alice asked in an innocent sounding tone.
"This is Melina Rana, our new student." Ms. Grayson said. "Please take her with you to class as you are both in Room 401."
"No probs." Alice replied, hurrying out just as the bell rang.
Michael looked at Melina. "Looks like that's my queue to get to class. See you at lunch?"
"Um… sure…"
"Cool." Michael ran off, disappearing into the growing crowd.
"So, you're the famed Rana." Alice said, pulling Melina into the crowd. "Nice to meet you, Melina."
"And you're Alice…"
"Masan. Alice Masan. Part of the Masan demon clan." Alice replied as the two hurried through the first floor hallways. "Spawn of the Masan clan head and loyal friend to the Rana clan."
"Um… nice to meet you too." Melina said. "By the way, what did you mean by 'famed Rana'."
"Let's just say that it's not every day that the daughter of a clan head suddenly appears from the dead. The whole underworld is buzzing about you." Alice smiled at Melina.
"Oh…"
News seemed to travel fast in the underworld, Melina thought. But at least I've met someone nice. Hopefully…
"Anyway, our class is here. We should find seats before the Trinch comes." Alice said, pushing open a wooden door.
The two walked inside to see that most of the class was already full with other students. Most were standing around in groups, chatting with one another. The classroom was quite ordinary looking with Maths posters and wooden desks with seats for students to sit in. There was a row of lockers at the back and a huge window on the one side of the class, showing the front of the school.
Some of the students turned to the sight of the two walking in. Most turned away at the sight of seeing Alice, however a few spotted Melina behind her and became curious.
"Yo Alice. Who's the new girl?" A boy sitting in the back with a few others yelled suddenly.
The boy who had called out to Alice was also wearing a red blazer and had the same amber eyes as Alice however, he had bronze skin and dreadlocks tied into a ponytail. The people around him either had a red or green blazer, with only one person wearing a blue blazer, a girl with wavy, silver hair.
"Antonio, this is Melina Rana." Alice replied, dragging Melina to the group. "Newest member of our esteemed school."
"A Rana huh?" Antonio said as he smirked at Melina. "Haven't had one of those since James' kids."
"Well, this is James' third kid." Alice replied proudly.
"So, you're the famed Rana everyone's talking about. Didn't realize you were James' kid." Antonio said, holding out a hand. "Anyway, nice to meet you. I'm Antonio Masan, Alice's cousin."
"Nice to meet you Antonio." Melina said, shaking his hand.
She then turned to ask about the others in the group, but the late bell rang, causing everyone to suddenly move to a table. Alice grabbed Melina, pulling her to a seat in the back, next to the window.
Alice took the seat next to Melina just as the door opened, silencing the room. It was as if the students had not been messing around a few seconds ago.
High heels clicked on the tiled floor as a tall woman who looked like Ms Grayson's twin walked inside the classroom. She was carrying a few books in her hand and wore a sundress that looked as if it was made of roses.
Melina suspected it was really made of roses as a sweet smell of roses engulfed the room with its scent.
"The girl at the back, make sure you come see me when the bell rings. I need to discuss something with you." The woman said, stopping in front of the class and looking sharply at the students.
Melina looked at the lady, taking a second to realize she was talking about her. She nodded her head in agreement and the woman turned away, heading to the large desk in the front of the class.
Sitting down, she opened one of the books she had been carrying and began calling out people's names and taking attendance. When she was done, she sent one of the students to take the register to the office and started working on some papers, ignoring the class.
Alice turned to Melina and whispered, "And that my friend is the Trinch. Never cross her and never ever confuse her for Ms. Grayson, the one you met before."
"So, are they both called Ms. Grayson?" Melina asked, looking down at her schedule to check.
"Yip." Antonio replied, turning around to face the two girls. "They're twins but don't let that fool you. The two are like water and fire personality wise. Anyway, who do you have first period?"
Melina looked at her schedule again and saw her first period was English with Mr. Farris. "I have Mr. Farris for English."
"Sweet. You're with Alice and me." Antonio said. "So, Rana girl, where have you been hiding for all these years?"
"Here we go…" Alice muttered but still looked interested in knowing the answer.
"Alice, don't act like you're not curious." Antonio exclaimed before turning back to Melina. "So, what's the story?"
Melina's father had prepared her for the questions others were bound to ask but she was still a little surprised to hear people actually ask her.
"I was curious about public school so I um… went to one instead." Melina replied awkwardly. "I'm guessing most come here."
"Yeah you're right. It's the easiest way to let our supernatural selves go wild." Alice said.
"Alice is especially good at that." Antonio smirked.
"Don't act like you're innocent, Antonio. We both know you're worse than me." Alice said as she gave Antonio a dirty look.
"I know I'm not innocent, my dear cousin. I just know how to get away with things unlike you who gets caught most of the time."
Melina felt a wave of deja vú as she watched the two bicker with each other over who was the better troublemaker. Thankfully for her, the argument was cut short by the bell ending homeroom.
Melina got up to head to Ms. Grayson's table when she felt a tug on her blazer. She turned to see Alice was the one behind the tugging.
"I'll meet you outside when you're done." Alice whispered before heading out of the class with Antonio and the rest of the class.
Melina, meanwhile, made her way to Ms. Grayson's desk, wondering why the teacher wanted to see her.
When she got to the desk, Ms Grayson said without looking up, "Melina, you have me for magic and from what your father has told me, you are not at the same level of understanding as your classmates are. Therefore, you will have to do extra homework alongside the one I give you in class."
She picked up two thick books and handed them to Melina. "I want you to study these books and write me a report by next week Tuesday."
Melina took the books and placed them in her bag. "Yes Ma'am. I'll do that."
Ms. Grayson looked up and smiled coldly. "Good. Now run along to your next class before you're late."
Melina nodded her head before heading out the class to meet Alice and Antonio in the hallways.
