I heard her footsteps coming towards the door I’d left open. I knew it was her because beyond my training that keeps me aware of my surroundings at all times; I’d somehow become attuned to her every movement. Not for nothing, but I’ve spent a good portion of the day, more than I could spare in fact, trying to figure out why her.
She hadn’t done anything earth-shattering, we’ve barely spoken two sentences to each other, but from the first time I laid eyes on her, she’d burrowed in, deep under my skin. I thought love called for more than that. That there was some kind of build-up to the main event. That’s how I’ve always been able to protect myself from falling victim in the past.
