The Game of Undeath

Death, a frightening concept to any mortal who has lived a long enough life. From those young to still not comprehend the nature of death, to those old enough who have been waiting for its inevitable embrace, death is a constant in species with finite lives. What the mortals didn’t know was that Death was alive. A concept, thought to be the end of all life, was actually one that has a life of its own, and it has grown bored for the first time in millennia of doing their job every single day without stopping in keeping the cycle of reincarnation busy. Said boredom gave them an idea to throw a still alive mortal into a different dimension… As a mortal that does not need to fear the concept of Death’s domain. They also gave said mortal a guide in the form of the mortal’s favorite hobby, gaming. With Death at his back (metaphorically of course), Sev, the mortal who Death has picked, must now navigate a world full of madness and insane habitats because there was no way a normal God actually shaped the world he was transmigrated to. Seriously, who in their right minds grabbed all the races ever conceived and placed them into a singular world? Hell, there was even steampunk, magitech, even some 21st century technology bullshit here. The less said about the futuristic weapons and inventions like laser guns, the better. And if that wasn’t enough, the System Death gave him was bare-bones as all hell! Stats that only grow if you allocate your points, some quests here and there, oh, and the best part, no HP and MP bar. So no min-max strategy will work, no matter how hard Sev tries. So yeah, Sev is in it for quite a ride. At least he can’t die, doesn’t mean he won’t feel the pain of having his body torn in half.

Starting Town (2)

As Sev walked through the town while the rest of the townspeople stayed away from the clearly bloody newcomer, he kept his eyes roaming across the town in an effort to spot something like a bath house or something along the lines.

And then he realized the state of the entire town. The houses were built with wood and thatch, with the occasional brick house here and there. There were also stores that sold bread, and if he squinted hard enough or got close enough, he could notice that the bread weren't the kind that he had in abundance back on Earth.

The bread here were the stale kind. The hard ones that lasted a long ass time.

'I forgot I was sent to a fantasy world, and in hindsight, advanced technology is rare to see in such worlds.' Sev thought to himself with growing horror. 'Oh fuck, does it mean I'll have to wipe my ass with a leaf every time I do a number two!?'

Sev shivered. Ain't no way he'd be using a goddamn leaf to wipe his behind.

"Jeff, please tell me there's some sort of indoor plumbing in this world." Sev half-begged, half-wished for the System to affirm his desire.

[There is indoor plumbing in the world of Dys, UnMortal user Sev. However, it is not located in the town of Uthrut, nor any town close to here.]

"… Fuck. Alright, alright, silver lining…" Sev murmured, his future already looking bleak at the thought of wiping his ass with leaves, and then the thought hit him. "Hold on a second, do I even need to poop with my current body?"

[If UnMortal user Sev desired to partake in food and delicacies, then defecating is the only way to remove waste from the body other than vomiting them out through the mouth.]

"… You know what, I'll skip eating until I can get to a place with indoor plumbing." Sev promised to himself with a dedicated nod. "Yes, yes. No food without indoor plumbing. I refuse to wipe my ass with a leaf."

Luckily, while Sev was muttering to himself about defecating and indoor plumbing, the other people were far enough to not hear his conversation with the System. That said, they still saw him talking to thin air so they were quick to write him off as a deranged and crazy person.

One of them was even about to report him to the guards until one of them, the one who rushed to get a healer earlier for Joy, happened about and told them that Sev was the one who helped find Joy.

This prompted the people to relax around him, but it still didn't take away the impression of Sev being a bit loony in the head.

"Anyway, what should I do now, Jeff?" Sev asked the System once again. "I'm assuming I'll be stuck with my bloodied clothes for a bit, so why not direct me to the reason why Death sent me here in the first place, and don't give me that bit about the horrifying night cycles in this world. Death wouldn't send me here in the first place if it was all about that."

[UnMortal user Sev is correct in your assumptions. Our master Death has given you an easy way to acclimate faster to the world of Dys, and that is the organization known as the Wayfarer's Guild.]

"… So basically, an Adventurer's Guild but with a different name?" Sev hummed while he stopped in place.

[In essence, yes.]

"Alright, so where is it?" Sev asked once more and another holographic window popped up in front of him.

[UnMortal user Sev is standing right next to it.]

Sev raised an eyebrow and looked directly to his left. His jaw dropped when he saw a building that was larger than all of the other buildings in the area. It had columns made of iron, walls made of tough looking brick (painted white too!), and glass windows that wouldn't look out of place in a modern setting.

Compared to the other houses that were mostly made of wood, wooden windows (the kind that just slides), and most, if not all of them just being one story high, the building for the Wayfarer's Guild was just too out of place in this town.

"How come I didn't see this earlier?" Sev wondered to himself while his feet slowly brought him to the steps leading to the front open double door of the building.

As he slowly scaled the stairs, a measly five steps, Sev began to hear chattering, cheerful cheers, and the sound of ripping paper. When he arrived at the entrance, he finally saw what laid inside.

There were countless of people doing business within the main halls of the Wayfarer's Guild. Most were lining up against the counters with the receptionists (goddamn they're cute!) happily serving to their needs. Others were sitting around tables and having a good old drink with other people, probably the rest of their parties. And some were in front of what seemed to be like a board full of posters, probably a notice board or quest board.

Sev felt like he entered a new world. If it wasn't apparent enough that what he was experiencing a new world, than the fantastical sight of a busy guild that could only be seen or heard in fiction was enough to give him the mindset of being in a different world.

'Well… I did not expect this.' Sev gulped, then took a step forward into the massive building. All at once, the people inside homed into Sev, their eyes glaring a hole into his body. Sev chuckled nervously, waving at the people with a shaky arm.

It seems his action were enough to placate the people inside, but that didn't mean they liked the fact that he smelled of iron.

'Jesus, this is one helluva welcome.' Sev sighed and put his arm down. He then spotted a short enough line of people and fell in line.

While it was nerve-wracking waiting in said line, what with the people around him scrunching their noses because of the smell, none of them actually was too offended to bring it up with Sev, which he was thankful for.

It was a few minutes later that he was finally his turn.

"Good afternoon, sir." The receptionist, a mighty cute one at that, greeted Sev with a friendly smile. "You are new around here, yes?"

"That's right." Sev nodded with a sheepish smile. "Apologies for the smell. I don't have any other spare clothing as of now due to a recent… altercation."

"Oh dear, how dreadful." The receptionist glanced at Sev with a slight frown full of sympathy. "Anyway, what is your current business with the Wayfarer's Guild?"

"Ah, I would like to register myself to the Wayfarer's Guild." Sev said with nary a stutter. His formal voice coming into play from the various interviews he had gone through back on Earth.

"Oh? An aspiring applicant, then?" The receptionist beamed slightly. Sev nodded as his response and the receptionist took a piece of paper. "Then before you register and fill up the form, you would have to pay the registration fee."

"… Ah, that might be a problem, currently." Sev felt a sweat drop down his cheek. The damned System didn't tell him about a fucking registration fee! "Due to the previous altercation I had the misfortune of facing earlier, I had lost most of my coin. Is there perhaps a loan system when it comes to registering with the guild?"

"I'm afraid not, sir." The receptionist shook her head and Sev sighed. "Sorry, sir, but rules are rules. No one is allowed to register without the necessary funds."

"… I understand. How much is the registration fee, then?" Sev asked the receptionist, to which she responded.

"One thousand Dyns." The receptionist stated and Sev had no idea what she meant or how much one thousand Dyns is.

"Ah, that's a bit too much for me currently." Sev sighed then moved to let the next customer, or maybe guild member, have their turn with the receptionist. "I'll come back in maybe a few days, scrounge up some coin first before registering."

"No problem, sir." The receptionist bowed. "Thank you and come again!"

Sev immediately headed out of the guild building, briefly hearing some conversations about him being some sort of fallen noble or other.

"Damn it Jeff, couldn't you have told me about the registration fee?" Sev swore to Death that if the System has a material body, he would be throttling it to kingdom come.

[UnMortal user Sev never asked, so this unit is not to blame for the lack of information. It is this unit's job to make sure Sev does not encounter incredibly hard difficulty when acclimating to the world of Dys. That does not mean that this unit will hold you by the hand, as ordered by our master Death.]

"… Fuck you, Jeff." Sev facepalmed. "Anyway, let's find a discrete enough spot."

A quick look around him let him know about the townspeople once again staring at him like some kind of attraction. It was a bit unnerving, that was for certain.

A few minutes later and Sev found a somewhat comfy spot in an alleyway. He then grabbed the pouch of coins the guard captain handed to him earlier and opened it.

"… Yeah, I have no idea what this means." Sev grabbed one of the coins and held it up. It was silver in color and had an engraving of a human head, probably a political figure. "Can you explain to me the currency system of this world, Jeff?"

[Affirmative. What UnMortal user Sev is currently holding is equivalent to ten Dyns. There are four types of coins in circulation, each with differing colors and materials. First is the bronze coin, which is equivalent to one Dyn. Second is the silver coin, which is equivalent to ten Dyn. Third is the gold coin, which is equivalent to one hundred Dyn. And last is the platinum coin, which is equivalent to one thousand Dyn.]

"So basically, the higher coin is worth ten times its lesser one." Sev frowned and counted the amount of coins in the pouch. It took him a few seconds and he grimaced. "Five silver and five bronze. Yeah, this ain't enough. I'm lucky I know how to improvise thanks to my experience with job interviews back on Earth, otherwise I'd be looking like an idiot right now."

Sev sighed once more.

"Jeff, how much does a regular inn cost here?"

[A night in an inn costs ten Dyn.]

"… So five nights." Sev breathed in deeply, before facepalming once more. "Time to look for a job, then."

More world-building.
