Chapter 49

Jennifer looked taken aback at Adair's forwardness towards her and took a few steps back from Adair in the process. When Adair saw this, she realized that maybe the previous thoughts that Jennifer was trying to persuade her to join her cause may have been a bit presumptuous and farsighted and that maybe Jennifer really only wanted a friend.

This made a whole bunch more sense to Adair, and maybe she concluded that she could have been a bit too presumptuous in judging the Galactic Alliance in the use of child labor and how far they would go to push their cause. She also realized that her mindset from a previous life had maybe biased her a bit too much and that maybe people were just doing things to be kind and that they did not have a second reason to do something.

This made Adair feel a bit bad, though, and after she recognized Jennifer's expression, she apologized to Jennifer, saying, "she had some painful experiences with alliances in the past and that she judged her too quickly, and could you please explain what the Galactic Alliance stands for. And why do you believe that the other students would lie to me about you and the Galactic Alliance."

Jennifer seemed to put off, though, and it appeared to Adair that she didn't quite believe her claims of having troubles with alliances in the past. So all she said is "Why wouldn't the other students lie? We are trying to break up their monopoly of the galactic center, and us getting an ally who has strong connections to Anahel would be invaluable. But you seem to have made up your mind on the matter, so all I will ask is that you stay true to your word and not help the Big five either."

When Jennifer said this, it threw Adair through a loop. Was she trying to gain an ally to help her fight against the big five? Or was she looking for a friend? Or maybe both? Either way, it appeared that her chances with the Galactic Alliance were slim to non-existent at this point. It also appeared that her chance of making a friend with Jennifer had disappeared, which was quite unfortunate since ideally, she would have made friends with everyone in this room since they all appeared to be highly influential in each of their societies, and they could help her if she ever left her own planet of Istea.

After that little outburst, Jennifer had backed away from Adair and started to play with what looked like an electronic tablet but was significantly thinner than the ones back in the Galactic Empire.

She stopped watching her, though, since Jarek, the boy with the scruffy voice and the Metal element, approached her and said, "Are you truly planning on staying out of the battle between the two of us, or were you just politely turning her down." Pointing to Jennifer.

When Jennifer heard this, she had peaked up from her device and appeared attentive to see what Adair's response would be. And to Jarek, she responded with that she truly was not interested in any battle or confrontation between the Alliance and the Big five.

When every student heard this, they all had different reactions to the news. To the majority of the Big Five, the students looked disappointed but understood, while Jennifer had a bit of a happier expression seeing that Adair did not go and join the group opposing her.

The only student who looked indifferent to this whole situation was Eion, who just sat there calmly taking in the whole situation around himself. Adair found this interesting since it either appeared that Eion either did not have a big impact in this battle between the big five and the Galactic Union or that Eion's empire did not believe that it mattered if the Galactic Union entered the big five at all.

Or that maybe his family did not influence him enough to have an opinion on the matter, and they wanted Eion to just have a good childhood before having to dawn the responsibilities of an adult-only once he became an adult.

If this last option was true, then she had quite a bit of respect for his parents since it appeared that everyone else's had made their students dawn their responsibilities way too early, in Adair's opinion.

She also wondered how having so much pressure on such young people would affect them in the future. But as of right now, that was not any of her concerns, since she assumed that she would probably not meet any of these students again after she finished this class.

She also wondered if she could become Eion's friend since she, along with him, seemed at least on the surface to not care about the political battle happening all around them. So she decided to walk over to Eion and say hi and ask if he wanted to become her friend.

So she did just that, but contrary to her expectations, when she asked if he wanted to become her friend, he outright refused her. So she went back to her seat, wondering why Eion was so cold towards her. Was it because of the way she acted with the other students? Was it because he knew she failed the test? Was it because she had connections with Anahel? Or was it some other reason?

Whatever the reason, it disappointed Adair that she was unable to make any friends from this class since she was sure that any one of them could greatly help her in her advancement of magic and speaking the language and just everything in general.

Soon the thirty minutes were up, though, and the other students left one by one until no one was left but the teacher, and once everyone was gone, he asked Adair to approach him for a conversation.

This worried Adair since she figured that she would probably be reprimanded for not filling out any of the tests. She was wrong, though, and he was interested in why Adair marked the periodic table the way she did and why she did it that way.

She briefly was tempted to lie about it and say that it was just random gibberish to fill the spaces, but she quickly shot down that idea because she didn't fill out the rest of the spaces and started a relationship with lying always ends poorly.

So what she said was that back where she came from, her people only knew of the elements that she filled out. She was slightly worried that this would tarnish Anahel's reputation since it showed that she clearly was lacking some very crucial knowledge, but she figured that since Anahel had sent her to a school, that meant that she probably already knew all of this information, so she was not too worried.

Adair was not too sure, though, why her teacher was so interested in this information since the periodic table in front of her was clearly more advanced and had significantly more elements than the one that she had.

Whatever the reason, though, her teacher said that he would provide extra lessons to get Adair up to the galactic level if she was willing to teach him everything about her world's elements. Adair saw nothing wrong with this situation since it would allow her to catch up back to her peers in this world, and giving information about a place she was likely never to ever see or visit again meant that this information that she was getting was practically free.

So she agreed to the teacher's proposition and asked when would be the next time they would meet would be which to this the teacher responded with how does tomorrow sound which Adair responded that that sounded great, and the teacher then said I would see you tomorrow and after that, a portal opened, and he exited through it.

Looking at the man leave, she questioned if the teachers were opening the portals or was the sanctuary opening them itself? She realized that this question really had no practical purpose other than to sate her curiosity, but she still wanted to know anyways.

She thought about it a bit and realized that she really did not have any way to figure this out but to ask the teacher themselves. But after she set the matter aside, she realized that she actually did have an option to learn this information, and that was to ask Cassandra.

She briefly wondered if it was appropriate for her to ask Cassandra such a question since she assumed that Cassandra probably had much better tasks to do than answer such a question, but she decided to ask it anyway.

So she asked into the air, "Cassandra could you answer a question for me please?" and to this, Cassandra responded with, "the teachers have access to create a portal to any destination they wish from inside this sanctuary."

While this answered her question, she wondered how Cassandra even knew that was the question that she was going to ask to which Cassandra responded with, "I thought Anahel would have told you that I can read the thoughts of everyone. In the sanctuary."
