Hello Work

On Monday morning I make my way to the packhouse. I am sad to be starting work but at least I am not nervous. I have been coming here to the servants’ quarter since I was a baby, and I had been working here part time when they needed extra staff for events for the last two years. Everyone is friendly and helpful, and I know what work that I will be doing. It is boring and repetitive, but it could be worse I tell myself.

The only thing that could make this situation worse is if I end up seeing Alex.

I am going to offer to do the jobs that will keep me in the kitchen and out of his way. I can’t cope with another encounter with him.

When I walk into the kitchen Mrs Welsh is already there to welcome me. She hands me a grey uniform to put on and shows me where to get changed.

She hands me a list of jobs that she wants me to do, and I get started. I am going to bury myself in work.
