Chapter 12: Cave of Nightmares

Mary-Allison Flagstone

The closer we get to the mouth of the cave, the more voices I hear inside my head. It’s difficult to understand them all at once. One voice is louder than the rest, but it’s coded in a language I don’t know, and I know most languages.

Christopher pulls me along like I’m not taking his spotty espionage seriously. Less sunlight now in the cracks in clouds, the tide will be coming in soon. We splash through suds when we enter the mouth of the great beast. Fangs above suck us in.

I pull out my torch. It doesn’t give us much light, but it’s better than nothing. Christopher seems to know his way around, he must come inside here often. If he died in here and I survived, I would never revisit. Makes no sense why Christopher would either if his wife really died in here—But why would Adam lie to me… or am I not remembering his story correctly?

“This way.”
