[Imperial Dracorium Mining Company (IDMC) Mineshaft B simultaneously]
Vedel hunched over in the mines, meticulously sifting through the bedrock in pursuit of valuable ores. His supervisor had given him a specific task: to locate Sagarillyum. This metal was both exceptionally rare and extraordinarily valuable, and Vedel didn't hold overly optimistic expectations of discovering even a tiny trace of it.
Nonetheless, his determination endured. He continued his relentless quest, squeezing through the narrowest tunnels and braving the deepest crevices, all in the hopes of unearthing a mere fragment of this prized resource. The prospect of the bonus he'd earn upon a successful find served as his unwavering motivation.
After hours of navigating the intricate cave system, the passageways gradually began to widen. At first, the expansion was slow and almost imperceptible, but soon they opened up exponentially, until he found himself standing in a cavern of such grand proportions that he could easily imagine an entire neighborhood being constructed within its vast expanse.
He gazed around in wonder, overwhelmed by the cavern's monumental scale. Whichever direction he looked, darkness stretched out, seemingly endless before any wall could meet his sight. From his vantage point, the cave appeared to be of near-infinite size, except for one distinct spot on the distant horizon. There, a small section of the wall bathed in a fiery light caught his attention. While it remained distant and still indiscernible, he couldn't help but be drawn towards it, his curiosity piqued by the mysterious glow.
'By the gods, what could that be?' he mused in silence.
Vedel began to tread cautiously toward the distant light, his footsteps deliberate and measured. To his astonishment, the source of illumination was even farther away than he had initially thought. It took a full 10 minutes of uninterrupted walking before he finally drew close enough to discern any meaningful details.
The source of light revealed itself to be a campfire, casting an eerie glow upon the scene. Five cloaked figures encircled the fire, their identities shrouded in mystery by the long, dark cloaks that concealed their features and physique. One of the enigmatic figures gripped a formidable wooden staff, its intricate carvings covered its handle, while the others carried an array of weaponry ready for action. Their arsenal ranged from gleaming swords to menacing halberds and spiked morningstars.
They spoke in a strange tongue, one that Vedel couldn't place or understand. Its guttural and discordant cadence grated on the ears, as though it were designed to inflict harm upon any unfortunate soul who might catch its almost demonic sounds.
"Who are these people?" Vedel wondered, his fingers instinctively moving toward the small blade that never left his side. There was something about these figures that was so disquieting that he barely noticed the chill running down his spine or the perspiration forming on his brow. His fear was so deeply ingrained and primal that it operated beneath the level of conscious thought, like a reflex you don't consciously recognize. It was like breathing, always there but taken for granted. Every fiber of his being urged him to flee, yet his conscious mind remained blissfully unaware of the primal fear that gripped his subconscious.
Although their language was inherently harsh, the enigmatic figures exuded an eerie sense of calm, as if engaged in a discussion as mundane as the day's weather.
Behind the group, an imposing, obsidian cage loomed in the darkness. Vedel couldn't shake the feeling that there was movement within, yet the distance still obscured his vision.
Against his better judgment, he determined to approach the campfire. His body rebelled against the decision, every step forward met with an internal battle of fear and curiosity. Nonetheless, Vedel's determination won out, propelling him ever closer to the cage in the hope of catching a glimpse of who or what was contained behind its bars.
With every careful step, he drew nearer to his objective, each pace bringing him closer to the answer he yearned for. It had transcended mere curiosity; his attraction to the shadows had evolved into something far more profound. It was as though a familiar, yet also unknown voice whispered to him, and his instinctive response was to reach out and heed the call.
After what felt like an eternity of cautious steps, Vedel finally stood before the cage.
Gazing inside, he found nothing but a shadow. Yet, as he peered into its depths, the shadow stared back.
Deep inside the crevices of darkness he found not emptiness, but eyes with an uncanny familiarity that peered into his soul without mercy.
He startled, leaping back and landing unceremoniously on the cold cavern floor. The knife slipped from his grasp, the sharp clatter of metal on stone that marked the end of its drop reverberated through the cave.
The men gathered around the campfire spun toward him as if struck by a bolt of lightning, their faces hidden beneath the hoods of their cloaks. Despite their obscured features, Vedel could sense the burning hate that tainted their gazes.
The man wielding the staff pointed his finger at him and uttered incomprehensible words. "Znurl griflark znurko frinthed nuk'zlurk!"
Vedel stood there, bewildered by the foreign language, but the actions of the other men provided a lesson in understanding that transcended words, teaching him the meaning of the foreign sentence far more vividly than any language instructor ever could.
The moment the staff-wielding man had ended his sentence, the other men unsheathed and readied their weapons, quickly assuming battle stances.
The fear that had gripped his body since he approached the campfire, a fear that had been momentarily overshadowed by his inexplicable fixation on the cage, finally took hold. It was only then that he realized his limbs had become rigid, his balance had wavered, and that a cold sweat had coated his body throughout the entire ordeal.
'Wait, this can't be happening! What will happen to Ruen and Alicia if I perish here?' He thought, a sense of shock gripping him. The fear of his impending demise was eclipsed only by the overwhelming worry and guilt he harbored for his family.
'They'd never be able to financially make it without me. They'd be doomed to the streets!' Both his body and mind raged with emotions. It felt like a burning energy coursed through his veins, whilst his mind was tearing itself at the seams.
Then, suddenly, a veil of clarity descended upon him. It felt as though time was slowing down. He took a deep breath, the doubts he had in his mind slowly washing away as his resolve grew. He wasn't just going to lay down and die.
He balled his fist and raised his arm.
"I CAN'T DIE HERE, NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT." He screamed with all his might.
"MY NAME IS VEDEL OF THE HOUSE JENARU, AND I WILL FIGHT TILL THE END!"
