Chapter 30: Losing the Child

Chrissy hasn't finished coughing when Sam and Isabel run in to join us. I'm not sure what they've done with the guards that were with them but they look just as much of a sight as we do. Sam is covered in mud so thick that there are deep finger tracks cutting through it to his freckles where he's tried to wipe enough away to see and breathe. Isabel is covered in thin scratches and seems to be trying to bring her clothes into a semblance of modesty.

I lean back on my heels, exhausted and glad to see them. Chrissy is mostly recovered but there's still a rattle to her cough that concerns me and I'm struggling to keep bent over her without spots forming in front of my eyes.

"Where's Mitch?" Isabel demands, tying a strip of torn fabric around her waist to cinch the shredded tunic closer. Her arms are bare and ripple with muscle and drying lines of blood. "We've looked for him all over this messed up hell hole and can't find him."
