Chapter thirty six

(Matthew's POV)

"I'm sorry, love," I start to say and she stares with patient eyes. "I'm sorry that you had to go through that without any support. I can't apologize for your mother or Michelle but I want you to know that I am deeply sorry for leaving you like that. It was not my intention to hurt you in any way but I guess that is what I keep doing." I sigh, still staring into her eyes that had softener but she kept her expression blank.

"I left because…" I swallow a non-existent ball of spit and my eyes fall away from her face to look at our joined hands, "I was scared," I whisper.

I steal a glance at her face to see a frown making its way there, trying but failing to marr her cute face. I will continue.

"We had only known each other for a few weeks by then and after you got shot…" I stop again and squeeze my eyes shut at the unbidden image of my mate's bloody unmoving body.

Cassandra squeezes my hands in comfort and I want to kiss her for being so wonderful.
