The Broken Sword

The worthless swordsman or the broken sword. that was what people called me. my name long since forgotten by everyone but me. despite the fact that I was one of the best swordsman that could be bought. no these unusual nicknames came from the fact that I never had so much as a copper on me. my equipment was all old and worn. some of it being repair. the most valuable thing I owned was my horse. the reason behind my poverty was simple. I never took coin as payment. only rations, repair, room and board. there was a reason I never took coin as payment, but that was my secret. a secret I never intended to let anyone find.

The spell

I walked out to the middle of the space in the hall, and unbuckled my belt. Tossing it a good distance away from myself as Faith used her fire to form a circle. I'd never seen her use so much fire, but she seemed to be managing. It was a very believable show since Faith was beginning to look exhausted towards the end of her 'spell'. Then Faith raised a coin up.

"In this coin," Faith began, "I will choose the form of the beast."

Faith held the coin close to her face whispering to it gently. Then as the gaps of light started to get big enough to see the men on the other side of the door she threw the coin at me. I caught it easily, and looked at it skeptically as the transformation began. She'd used a silver as I'd asked. I would be stuck as a dragon for two days.

I folded as the pain of my guts rearranging, and my bones shifting got worse. I didn't fight the transformation as it took hold. When I didn't fight it the transformation moved quicker. My bones cracked, and shifted as the change moved on. I kept my teeth gritted.

I didn't want to bite my tongue off again. It would grow back but it wasn't pleasant when it did happen. The grinding of my bones slowly as my body expanded. My dragon form was almost fully formed as I got bigger, and bigger. I stood there breathing heavily as the pain faded slowly with my head down.

My wings kept my chest off the ground as I raised my head slowly. I could feel my muscles relaxing as I looked around at all the men in the hall so transfixed on what had just happened before their eyes. I tilted my head until that crick in my neck popped, and I shook the last bit of pain off. The doors were giving slowly. Faith approached me slowly.

"Are you ready?" she approached me slowly.

I growled as I stepped forward. Eyes on the enemy. I used my head to point at the doors. I wanted the men away from the doors. I couldn't speak in this form, and she should know that.

I moved on all fours closer to the doors, and the men moved away quickly. The doors wouldn't last much longer anyways so them supporting the door was pretty useless anyways. I tensed my legs, and crouched back. I shot through the doors, and the men directly behind those doors.
