The Broken Sword

The worthless swordsman or the broken sword. that was what people called me. my name long since forgotten by everyone but me. despite the fact that I was one of the best swordsman that could be bought. no these unusual nicknames came from the fact that I never had so much as a copper on me. my equipment was all old and worn. some of it being repair. the most valuable thing I owned was my horse. the reason behind my poverty was simple. I never took coin as payment. only rations, repair, room and board. there was a reason I never took coin as payment, but that was my secret. a secret I never intended to let anyone find.

Silence

I thought about asking here to cast that spell again for a good long while. Every time Faith would think to ask a question her heart would speed up just a little. I would glare at her, and she would suddenly have a reason not to speak again. We traveled like this for a few days. With her trying to ask questions, and me glaring her into silence.

"This would be easier if I knew where we were going," I was riding parallel to Faith.

"I prefer not to take the direct route through the big cities," Faith avoided answering like she had done every time I'd asked before.

"We're headed into small coastal town areas," I let my horse fall in step with Faith's, "Small coastal towns in the warm seasons are a risky area. There's a high chance that we'll run into a group of raiding north men."

"North men," Faith laughed, "They raid maybe one village per month. We would have to be unbelievably unlucky to wander into a raid while travelling."

Does this woman know just how bad my luck is?

"I'm not one who leaves these things to chance," I scowl, "Every time I have left things to chance I've ended up worse off."

"I take it that you believe that you're unlucky," Faith smiled at me, "Luck has nothing to do with the raids. A man like you should know that."

"If we run into a raid," I looked at her, "Then I'm blaming you for it."

"You shouldn't worry so much," Faith glanced back at me.

I glared at her pinching my fingers together, and rubbing them. Symbolizing coin. Faith saw this, and grimaced. I had every reason to be cautious. She knew what would happen to me if I even so much as touched a coin.
