ISAAC'S POV
"Why do you keep helping me?" She asked me. "And don't tell me I am a means to an end. You show me kindness even when you don't have to. Why?"
I turned to look at Imogen, struggling to keep my expression neutral. Her question caught me off guard, stirring emotions I'd tried and was still trying so hard to bury.
"Because you remind me of someone, Imogen. And I hate seeing you trapped in this kind of situation. It reminds me of her."
The words left my mouth before I could stop them. I watched as something flickered in Imogen's eyes, a warmth that made my heart race. Damn it. This was exactly what I'd been trying to avoid.
"I... I don't know what to say," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Who—"
I coughed, cutting her off. I couldn't let this continue. "You should go," I said abruptly, standing up. "It's not safe for any of us for you to be with me for too long."
