The Boss's Missing Man

Wen Ro, the boss of the most powerful organization in the city's criminal underworld, is missing a man and will stop at nothing to get him back. To summarize quickly: a very gay story with some crime thrown in for fun. Some trans main characters, poor management of a criminal empire, and more ducks than I planned. Usually updates Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Chapter 5

Wen drove home in silence, not bothering to acknowledge his driver before glumly staring out the backseat window. He replayed every moment of the day in his mind, trying and failing to make sense of it all. Finally, he gave up, and watched the city flash by as the sun sank.

Once Wen's building came into view, he heaved a sigh of relief. He was home, and everything else could wait until tomorrow. He left his bodyguards on the first floor and took the private lift to the top. He owned the entire building, and besides the top floor he occupied, there were no paying residents. It was an incredible waste of space, but he had needed somewhere to go that wasn't his family's estate. Living in one of the many buildings his family owned was the best option, though costly. Having anyone else living in the building was a security risk, so it was a waste of money and space to take over the whole building. Still, Wen was stubborn. He didn't mind wasting a bit of money if it meant some peace of mind.

The security in his building was exceptional, as it was in all the places he went. The structure having no other occupants meant multiple bodyguards and personnel could live on the lower floors, keeping his home staffed with some sort of protection. And, of course, the top floor was all his, so Wen could be alone as he preferred.

Or at least, he should have been alone. There was no reason for today to be any different than any other day. There had been no security breaches, nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary. That is until Wen went to sit on his couch and found someone already on it.

The man from before, Day, was curled up asleep on his side. He had wrapped himself in a blanket Wen had never used besides for decoration. Wen quite liked the sight and felt nothing was wrong with it. After a few dazed moments, he shook himself out of it and mentally berated himself. What was wrong with him? This was a huge issue. He had to get his head on straight.

"What the fuck are you doing?" He asked, keeping his voice as steady and intimidating as possible.

Day didn't respond at first; he simply blinked his eyes open a few times and lazily sat up, keeping the blanket wrapped around his shoulders. "Oh," he said slowly, "you're home."

"Yes." Wen leveled his glare. He was known for terrifying even the most hardened of criminals, squeezing information out of any informant with nothing more than a look.

"Hmmmm," Day hummed sleepily, "welcome back."

This was not going as Wen planned.

"What. Are. You. Doing?"

Day yawned, taking his time to reply. "I was waiting for you. But you took a really long time, so I took a nap first. It was a very good nap, by the way. Your couch is great for sleeping on. Not all couches are. You should be proud of yours."

Wen pressed a button on his watch, alerting security.

"How did you get in?"

Day tilted his head in sleepy confusion, "I walked in? Isn't that how you got in? I think it's the only way."

"Boss!" A large bodyguard barreled through the door, followed by two more. He looked to Wen for directions, but none came. Wen was staring at the man on the couch, mouth slightly agape.

"I only came to be helpful! You don't have to worry about me," Day said, ignoring the barrage of guards.

Wen snapped his jaw shut and ground his teeth together before gritting out, "Helpful?"

"You're suspicious of me," Day accused, "I can tell. You told your men to watch me, didn't you?"

Wen said nothing, just ground his teeth harder.

Not expecting a response, Day continued, "So I thought I would help you! I'm here, so you don't have to have anyone watch me. You can do it yourself! Easy!" He flashed a bright smile and curled his legs back onto the couch.

"Boss!" Another intruder came running through the door, out of breath and panicked. It was Caid. "I know you said to keep an eye on that weirdo, but he's disappeared! He's vanished into thin air and…" Caid stopped when he noticed the scene in front of him. "He's…that's…." He glanced back and forth between everyone in the room until Wen held up a hand and ended his stuttering.

"Enough. Everyone here is dismissed."

The three guards glanced between each other, unsure, but none were bold enough to question their boss's command. They backed out of the open door slowly, still wondering what had just happened.

Caid had no reservations about questioning Wen, and he waited until the guards cleared the room to turn on his boss. But before any sound could come from his open mouth, Wen interrupted.

"The task I assigned you is proving to be considerably more difficult than anticipated."

Caid nodded and resisted the urge to roll his eyes. His boss had no idea how taxing the past few hours had been.

"I will be lending you assistance," Wen continued, "and the target will be staying here under my supervision until further notice."

Caid's mouth dropped open. He was about to protest when Day spoke first.

"Target? That's a funny way to refer to your newest employee."

At that, Caid did roll his eyes. Wen, however, was unamused.

"Quiet!" He snapped, pinching his brow. He inhaled a few times until his voice came out steadier. Turning to Caid he instructed, "Send someone up to prepare the guest room. And have the rest of the building thoroughly searched for security threats."

"The guest room?" Caid's eyebrows shot up. "How about I find him a room on another floor closer to me and the rest of the men?"

"No need," Wen responded, looking at Day, "I will personally be keeping a very close eye on him."

Day said nothing, only glanced up happily and nodded.
