Chapter 49

                      Jacob Mackay

Jacob sat on the road, leaning against the front tire of his car. He had his right knee up and his right hand rested on the knee. His left leg was stretched out before him and his head hung between his shoulders. There were no more tears left and so he kept his gaze trained on the ground.

People came out from their cars moping at the scene from a distance. The stranger that had held Jacob back hung around, just in case he thought of doing something stupid again.

It took about five minutes. He didn't know exactly how long he sat there for, but the sound of the police sirens pulled him back to reality. The firetrucks and an ambulance followed. He raised his head to see uniformed men as they jumped out of the incoming cars, swarming the scene. He had no inclination to stand up and talk to them.
