“Happy New Year,” he said breathlessly.
“Happy New Year, Parrish. I’m sorry I didn’t call earlier—”
“No, that’s okay. How’s your dad doing?”
“I don’t know, but something strange did happen.”
“Oh?”
“He’d been swearing up and down he wouldn’t go along with any of the procedures his doctors recommended, and then all of a sudden he agreed. Begrudgingly, but it sounds like he’s willing to go along with it.”
“I’m glad to hear that.” More than anything he wanted to ask if Ransom would be coming home soon, but he didn’t want to come across as needy.
He was glad he hadn’t said anything when Ransom continued, “He’s going to need a pacemaker and a couple of stents, and they’ll do that as soon as they’ve stabilized his blood sugar. Once that’s done, we’ll have him transferred to an assisted living facility. It’s become clear, even to him, that Mom won’t be able to take care of him.”
“Will she go with him?” Parrish knew how strained things were between his lover’s parents.
