18: Landing the Deal

A couple more weeks went by and nothing about marriage came up until they went to another party. Verna bumped into Anita, the girl she had met at Collin and Thelma’s barbecue.

Anita looked at Verna’s left hand. “You’re not married yet? You two are like so suited for each other! I’m surprised.”

Verna blushed and soon it came out that she was pregnant. Anita beamed. “Congratulations! It’s coming, then.”

“What is?” Verna asked blankly.

“Why, the proposal, of course!” Anita winked.

Verna merely shrugged.

“What, you don’t believe me?”

When Verna said she wouldn’t like anything more, Anita laughed and said, “Good. Just wait for it.”

“Let’s go away, Verna,” Travis said a few days later.

“Go away? Where?”

“Let’s go to the Maldives, New Zealand, wherever.”

“When?”

“Anytime you want.”

“Oh. Okay… with Zane?”

“No! Just the two of us.” Pause. “So where do you want to go?”

“I’ve always wanted to go to Greece,” she offered tentatively.
