The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

"There's a huge reward for killing it," the first voice spoke up again.

I didn't know why these two particular voices stood out so much when surrounded by so many other voices.

"Yeah," She spoke a little louder, only to be shushed so she wouldn't break my concentration, "If this thing fights with us we will have a powerful beast on our side. You saw what he did in the videos. Killing not only a Wyvern, but an elf as well. Do you have any idea how valuable that kind of peace of mind will be for the citizens of earth?"

"What do I care what those cowards think?" the first voice practically snarled.

"Knowing you don't want to fight isn't cowardice," the feminine voice replied, "They served their required three years out of the academy. They've earned the right to be non combatants."

"Spoken like a true coward," the male voice raised this time.

Going silent after he was shushed. I let the words slip away as my focus was consumed by the task at hand. Our shuttles brushed over the wall easily. I didn't think that we'd been seen as they searched for a good spot to land. I kept up my barrier.

Keeping us out of sight as long as I could. While they searched for a good spot to land. Some sort of power slammed into my barrier. Shattering it as if it were made of glass. My eyes snapped open as the shuttle shook violently.

I picked up the radio.

"We're going down," I shouted, "Something is bringing us down. I expected resistance. Once we land I want you to avoid attacking."

"We're being attacked, and you don't want us to fight back," someone screamed over the radio.

"This is a peace mission," I shouted into the receiver, "Feel free to defend, but do not attack without provocation."

My power shot outward in all directions. Completely focused on defense, and gently forcing our attackers away from us. I sensed the power forcing us down recoil slightly. Almost as if it were surprised. I helped the shuttle to the ground gently.

Keeping my power extended in all directions defensively as I waited for another attack. No attack came.

"Stay in the shuttle while I disembark," I ordered over the receiver, "They haven't attacked us again since we landed. Let me get the lay of the land."

"Orders received, and understood," the pilot of the other shuttle answered.

I moved over to the hatch. Many of the men, and woman in my shuttle had already unbuckled. Smart move. I unlatched the hatch. Stepping out quietly while trying to keep my mana calm.

I didn't want to show any signs of hostility while I wasn't under attack. I looked right at the creatures that surrounded us. There were dozens I could see. Probably dozens I couldn't see as well.

"I have come here peacefully," I straightened.

Keeping my arms away from my body just enough to let them know I wouldn't be going for my weapon.

"Can I speak to the one in charge here?" I asked.

Bowing slightly to show some form of respect since a nod wasn't likely to come across correctly. I felt the power of the creature in charge long before I saw her. It was difficult for me to keep my mana under control with such a powerful creature approaching. She seemed to just materialize out of thin air. A unicorn just like the reports had suggested.

"It's unusual for humans like yourself to come here without the intent to attack," she spoke in perfect english.

Surprising me. I didn't know she could speak english.

"I spoke to a dragon that's residing here for now," I bowed my head while still trying to keep my eyes on the beautiful creature, "He peaked my interest, and forced me to think a different way. I would like to speak with him again."

"I'm afraid that isn't possible," she answered.

She didn't say anything else.

"He's still alive," I felt a tremble go up my spine as a pulse of power washed through me, "That was his power wasn't it?"

"He has no control over his power at the moment," the unicorn answered, "I'm afraid I cannot say anymore on the matter."

"Please allow me to go to him anyway," I straightened slowly, "I have no intention of harming him in any way."

She turned her head away from me. Seeming to be focused on something else for a moment. It felt almost as if she split into two different entities. Yet she didn't move an inch. There was a tense silence for a few moments.

"She will come down here, and decide for herself," the unicorn turned her head to look at me again, "You will wait until she comes."

Her tone said this wasn't a request. It was an order. It was difficult for me to stand there silently surrounded by beasts. My instincts were to launch an attack, but they hadn't given me a reason to. They were all tense as well.

As if they were waiting for me to launch an attack. The unnerving stillness of the beasts surrounding the two shuttles was enough to make even the most grizzled veterans nervous. The roar that shook the trees nearly an hour later made my mana gather for an attack.

"Don't," the unicorn warned.

Her tone completely changed. Hostility flew through her mana. Chilling me to the core. She would attack, and kill me if I so much as attempted an attack. She could kill this entire group in a single attack if she wanted to.

The flap of wings came through the blizzard. The power of the creature was weaker then the ruler here. Yet she seemed to revere the creature that was coming for some reason. The snow cleared for a moment. Shining white scales were the first thing I noticed about the creature.

She landed surprisingly soft in the thick snow. She was far more graceful then the last one I'd seen, but there was no mistaking a dragon. My eyes widened as I soaked in the view. There are two dragons.

"Why did you call me here?" she ignored me entirely.
