Chapter 31: Family Reunions

“Well,” I said, walking up the stairs of my front porch with my keys hanging from my hand. “To what do I owe this pleasant family reunion?”

Alex stood up from the wooden seat, wringing her hands together in front of her.

Luke had driven off, disappearing into the night after we said goodnight. His eyes held questions in them, but I reassured him that everything was alright.

“You haven’t answered any of my calls or texts,” she said, tucking a lock of her red hair behind her ear. “I came over to see how you were doing.”

“Did you know?” I asked, arching my brow at her.

I moved past her to unlock the door and walked in without closing it. She took the silent invitation and followed me into the kitchen.

“I’m sorry, Ki,” she said, looking down at her folded hands.

Our friendship was one of those rare and special types that seemed to defy time and space. We had first met in elementary school, and ever since then, our bond had grown stronger with each passing year.
