Chapter Two

To earth Natalie" Celia snapped me out of my thoughts."This nescient behaviour of yours is really getting out of hand" she shouted on top of her voice to battle the loud music that is playing.

"What's your problem?" I snapped back annoyed. Not that she had said something bad but I just needed something to pour my anger and frustration on or at least someone to blame for Lexis's disappearance. I know as powerful as Lexis is, he can't go missing for minutes without the media getting interested in the story. A story on Lexis is a hotcake which would have been headlined, "Billionaire Business Guru, Lexis Miltmore Goes Missing". Such a headline would have made them millionaires hands down, but it's been a month and I still live my normal life without being chased by reporters to fish out information from me concerning my husband's disappearance. This means Lexis still runs his normal life without me tracing his whereabout. Such a smart guy he is.

exis and I got married three months ago when my grandpa deemed it best to arrange a marriage between the Miltmore's and our family, the Megason's. These two families have been business partners for forty years and my grandpa, Elliot Megason wanted to seal the bond with a marriage in order to make us one family. Undeniably, everyone was happy except me. Why should I be happy when I'm the sacrificial lamb? A young energetic lady of twenty three years who just completed her first degree. To think of how the news was broke to me.

Flashback

It is one of our family dinners and I heard the Miltmore's would be joining in a form of a welcoming party for the arrival of their only son Lexis Miltmore, for completing his Masters Degree in the States.

"Mom it's just a welcoming dinner not an engagement party." I told my mum as she had busily turned herself into a baker with flours covering her body. The two maids, Anita and Flora were exchanging exciting looks. They sure love it when they're laid off work. When mom gets to the kitchen, she wants to do everything by herself.

"It's not just a welcoming dinner baby, I'm just happy that my son is back home after two years" mom corrected me with a smile on her face.

Her son? Her son? That part kept replaying itself in my head but I brushed it off. Everyone in my family loves Lexis except me. He has this trait of a good leader and someone with big dreams. He commands respect from both the young and old not because he is a Billionaire's son, he just earned it through how he carries himself and help people solve serious matters. At age fifteen, he was attending board meetings and his input helped in many ways. At least that's what everyone says but I just don't see any good thing in him. May be it is because he is smarter than me and how my dad kept telling me to follow his steps. My hate for him grew stronger at age six when my parents changed my school, saying I had to be close to Lexis so he could take care of me. How? Why do I have to be the one to change school and not him? Besides, I had made a lot of friends that I wasn't ready to cut ties with. Dad complained that I was getting involved in a lot of fights and he didn't want me to grow into a rebel instead of a fine cultured lady. I am wondering how an eleven years old boy could take care of me better than my two trained guards who expertly watched me from afar. I protested to being in the same school with the one I dreaded most but dad told me it was either I chose between being homeschooled and that school. I loved living a free life so I chose the latter and that was where I met my two best friends.

Lexis knew I hated the very sight of him so he always blessed me with his presence at school. Like "Natalie, are you OK?", "Do you need anything before I go for my next class? Natalie, why do you have a sad face, did someone say something bad to you?" Blah blah blah. I remember how he got into a fight with one boy who was pestering me. Everyone was wondering what could have pushed their perfect boy into a fight. It just annoyed me because I knew he wanted to prove to me that I couldn't take care of myself without him...

At dinner, grandpa sat at the head table with dad beside him on the right and Lexis's dad on the left. Mom was sitting next to dad with Lexis's mother sitting next to her. Isn't she supposed to sit by her husband? I thought to myself as I walked in and realized the only seat available was close to Lexis. If only his mom had sat close to her husband, then I wouldn't be left to sit close to him. Lexis got up and pulled the chair for me to sit. I took it as a chance to scan his new look. One thing I grew to accept is that Lexis Miltmore is a beauty but I never made him feel I noticed it. I remember how girls drool over him back in school and how they nicknamed me 'miss lucky' just because I'm close to him. What they didn't know was how much I despised him. Within five seconds, I digested all his features. He had grown much taller and qualified for a 6'0" height. Much taller as compared to the last time I saw him. His doll eyes were shiny, I guess that was because of the light rays. His pouted pink lips were ever luring as he licked them unknowingly. A habit he refused to discard from childhood. His muscles were bigger than before, making his chest broader. His hair, oh his hair! Something I'd admired since. History has it that, his grandpa which I never grew to meet because he died of cardiac arrest was a German. That explains his soft curly hair and pointed nose. Someone cleared his throat and it was my grandpa.

"You two don't want our food to get cold, do you? He asked.

I walked in front of the chair and muttered a"Thank you" to Lexis as I sat. "I'm sorry for being late" I said to everyone present.

"Natalie, Lexis was telling us how he missed your chocolate cookies". His little sister, Amalia chirped in avoiding Lexis' murderous stare.

"What? I'm only saying the truth". Amalia said when she realized all eyes were on her. I began thinking of when in my freaking life that I could have been possessed to give a chocolate cookie to Lexis. Not just a regular chocolate cookie, but one I made using my secret recipe. Then my mind drifted to a holiday I spent with Amalia at their house. I baked my special chocolate cookie for everyone leaving Lexis out but when I returned from the washroom, there was no cookie left for me. The cookie just vanished and aunt Phoebe, Lexis's mum had to share hers with me.

"You stole my cookie?" I turned to my right and asked Lexis with a frown on my face. Everyone is enjoying the scene I guessed because they were all listening to our little fight which if Jesus doesn't hold me down I will throw my first punch depending on his reply.

He scratched his brow and whispered, "Is that how you welcome someone you haven't seen in a while? Besides, the cookie issue was like a century ago" he ended with a wink.

I boiled up.

"I can see the distance has made you two get along fine" my dad, Stanley Megason spoke and everyone was nodding in agreement. No one is getting along, I was about to be the next WWE champion and you ruined it with your comment. I thought to myself rolling my eyes.

I kept my cool throughout dinner and shooting Lexis with my "THIS ISN'T OVER LOOK" which I know he's smart enough to understand.

During dessert, grandpa called for a toast.

"This is to the youngest to be couples and the union of two great families in Ghana".

We all raised our glasses, made the toast and sipped on our drinks. Lexis finished everything in his glass and smiled at me mischievously.

"Errm....is there anything I should know? I'm practically the lost one here". I said roaming my eyes on everyone's face and resting it on Lexis'.

"You and Lexis will be getting married two weeks from now, sweety". Grandpa said with a broad smile. The news didn't settle well with me.

"Why me?Why not Constance, my cousin? She's of the same age as Lexis and more prepared for marriage than me. Besides, she likes Lexis but I don't". I said in frustration.

"When I married your mom, I didn't like the very sight of her but look at us now?"

Dad chipped in, kissing mom's nap.

"Why do you want to end my young life this early? Being married means having babies and living a boring life with a boring husband. I emphasized on boring husband looking at Lexis's face. "I have my life planned out. I want to enjoy my youth, party and have a lot of flings. If Mr. Miltmore here wants to marry me, then I suggest he waits for another five years.

"Enough of your blabbing nonsense" my grandfather said in a strong voice that made me quiver. I guess he didn't like what I said very much.

"You're marrying Lexis in the next two weeks or you'll be ripped off of all your benefits as a Megason and of course all your inheritance.

"But grandpa I ....." I was silenced by him again mid sentence.

"Young lady what I've said is final !" He said.

"Mum, Dad??" I called my parents pleadingly, looking them in the eyes hoping they'd come to my rescue but all I got from them was a shrug. Not being able to take it anymore as tears threatened to fall, I stormed out of the dining room to my room, locked the door behind me and soaked my pillow with tears...

whew…. what a very long chapter it is… stay tuned guysssss☺️
