Carefully making his way to the closest zombie, Malachi's sweaty hands tightened around the handle of the metal bat. He was finally going to face off against a zombie for the first time.
Malachi's heart raced.
He wasn't feeling odd about fighting the zombie because they were strong or the risk of turning into one; it was the image of their once-human selves in his head and the fact that he was aiming to kill them.
In the end, Malachi knew he had to adapt to his new reality, knowing the zombies appeared more than ready to kill him.
It didn't take long for Malachi and David to come across the first zombie.
By avoiding loud sounds, the zombie remained unaware of their presence.
Malachi, using his agility, swiftly approached the zombie.
Despite the zombie raising its head coincidentally, Malachi's metal bat made forceful contact, sending it flying across the store.
Closing his eyes and mouth, Malachi took precautions against the zombie's blood, mindful of the fictional rules he'd encountered in stories about turning into a zombie.
Being individually weak didn't make the fights any less risky.
As the brain matter of the zombie he had just hit spilled, Malachi's body trembled when the realisation that he had just killed a former human settled in.
Malachi wasn't given enough time to collect himself, as two distinct growls echoed in the store after the noise of his attack on the first zombie.
These growls belonged to the two last remaining zombies.
When it first echoed, the fire spear David had materialised shook and almost disappeared. It was clear that David was shaken; however, Malachi was unsure if it was because of the growls from the last two zombies or something else.
Thankfully, David managed to regain control over the fire spear and prevented it from disappearing.
On the other hand, Malachi was aware of what he had to do, which was to kill the last two zombies. Even if he was shaken by what was happening, Malachi still pushed through it as adrenaline coursed through his veins.
Locating the next zombie closer to them, Malachi blurred again from his location and stormed in its direction.
Unlike the first one, although this one had already begun to move, Malachi was still able to put it out with a violent hit to its head.
After sending another zombie flying in another direction, Malachi did not stop and went for the last one, giving it the same fate as the first two zombies.
Putting all his strength into the attack against the last zombie, its entire head burst open, and Malachi almost got a little of its brain matter on his body.
After killing all the last remaining three zombies in the store, Malachi stood still in one position and breathed heavily.
The bloody metal bat in his hand slowly fell from his grip as the adrenaline he had coursing through his body slowly left him. It was then that the realisation that he had killed a zombie and more than one of them hit Malachi again.
Malachi's stomach twisted as he remembered the sensation of hitting through flesh when he struck the zombies. One attack for each zombie, yet it felt like more than a physical exertion.
Collapsing to sit on the ground, Malachi watched as David, who had just caught up, arrived and stared at the bloody mess on the floor.
Unable to hold it in like his dad, David turned his head to vomit by the side.
The completely headless body of the zombie and its scattered brain matter must have been impactful to David, as the control he had over his fire spear vanished when he started vomiting, and the store returned to its dark state.
Malachi, too weak to speak, could only watch.
To distract himself from overwhelming emotions, Malachi used his unique vision to check on the people trapped in the store because of the zombies.
