Summer Festival

Seeing how Gabriela aced the tests he gave for fifth-graders, he asked if she would like to do sixth-grade problems, she nodded in agreement. After a couple of weeks, with Alex leading the conversations, they soon began to talk about things outside of schoolwork. Starting off with basic things like favorite food, favorite color, and hobbies. Gabriela briefly stated that she didn't have any favorite food, eating only what was given to her, she never colored in a coloring book or dealt with crayons, let alone think of a favorite color. And the only things she did aside from household chores were studying and fighting. She did explain that the fighting she did was in self-defense. Alex explained that she will be safe here and if anyone tries to bully her, to let him know. On top of that, he could help her train, being a blue belt in Martial Arts himself. Instead of agreeing to train with him, she started asking him the same questions, catching him off guard. He simply said that he never thought of any particular color and he enjoyed eating a variety of food. As for hobbies, he enjoys Martial Arts.

Spending a month in a half working on sixth-grade problems, Alex believed that Gabriela was smart enough to go straight into seventh grade. He will definitely need to talk to Amy about this before school began. Alex took a big leap when he asked Gabriela if she would like to go to the Summer Festival with him and his friends. He explained to her that she has been doing great and that it will be nice to take a break and enjoy the summer before school starts, next month. Growing to trust Alex and feeling safe around him, she smiled in agreement. Alex then checked with his friends and everyone agreed to meet up the following Saturday.

When Amy heard the news she made sure her Granddaughter had plenty of money, not only for food but also for games. Especially since there would be a variety of games during the Festival as well as a few rides. Amy also made sure to help Gabriela dress for the weather since they would be doing a fair amount of walking in the streets, something her Granddaughter was not used to. Since when she rarely went to the store, it was always with her parents and they would go from the house to the car and the car to the store and vice versa. Knowing what would happen in the same car with her Dad, she tried to avoid going altogether. Staying inside her room as much as possible studying.

On Saturday, Alex went to pick up Gabriela to go to the festival. Despite her straight face, she looked cute in her light-colored, flowery blouse and fitted blue jeans, natural colored lip gloss, and her straight brown hair, now mid-length, partly held in a ponytail with a cute ribbon.

Gabriela was amazed to see so many people filling the usually quiet streets. Alex smiled at her, explaining she needs to let him know when she wants to stop so that they don't lose each other amongst the crowd. Gabriela began acting her age, smiling brightly, walking energetically to each stall, buying candies, snacks, and even a couple of little toys. Alex was glad to see Gabriela enjoying herself at the different stalls. When they got close to the end of the street, they saw a huge toy store. Glancing around Alex noticed his friends were nowhere around.

****************

About to enter the store, Gabriela felt a hand on her shoulder, so she quickly stomped on the person's foot and elbowed the person behind her before turning around taking a defensive stance. Everyone close by was shocked at seeing how quickly the happy, pretty, little girl near them became serious and ready to attack. While Alex went to Gabriela and apologized to her as his friend didn't mean any harm, his friends were frozen in place, not knowing what to think of the girl before them. Alex has mentioned Gabriela to them, saying how she has been through some things, causing her to be cautious with her surroundings and that she doesn't like being touched. Unfortunately, though, Mike didn't pay any attention to that last part as he never would have thought the cute 'little kitten' next to Alex would be so aggressive and strong.

With Alex's comforting and warm voice Gabriela relaxed, lowering her arms, and apologized to the boy, who is now in front of her. Mike also apologized for touching her, learning his lesson not to ever get on the "little kittens" bad side, because she can really pack a punch. She reminded him of a kitten, playful yet ready to use its sharp claws when feeling threatened.

Alex then introduced his friends to Gabriela, she did her best to smile and only said hello in a low voice. Thinking about how Gabriela reacted the way she did was most likely due to what she has been through, Natalie and Monica went to Gabriela's side (making sure not to get too close) and asked her if she would like to check out the higher levels of the store. Gabriela felt a bit uncomfortable, but since the older girls didn't make fun of her and instead offered to take her with them with a bright smile on their faces, Gabriela nodded and said in a low, barely audible voice, "ok".

Gabriela was actually enjoying herself with Natalie and Monica, while the boys headed off in a different way in the huge store. The girls began asking Gabriela "How do you like the countryside? What do you want for Christmas?" Gabriela answered them, giggling when they asked her about where she likes to go to eat and her favorite color, remembering how Alex asked her the same questions and surprised that they had the same answer. They all eventually left the huge toy store to go to eat and play games. By the end of the day, Gabriela ended up making new friends. The girls even hugged her when they were saying their bye's. Mike, on the other hand, kept his hands to himself only waving bye to Gabriela.
