Taking a deep breath to steady himself and clear his head, Stacy forced a tight smile and stepped into place in the lunch line. Darian leaned on the wall beside him, worry still etched in his face. Searching for something to say to turn the conversation back to where it usually was between them, something light, Stacy admitted, “I quit my job this weekend.”
Darian’s eyebrows rose to vanish beneath the brim of his baseball cap. So much for light.“Is that a good thing?”
Stacy shrugged again. “I haven’t actually toldanyone about it yet. I mean, at the shop. My friend Ange knows because I blew off Saturday to…” He trailed off, not wanting to go there. “I hung out at his place instead of clocking in. And then yesterday I just didn’t show up.”
