"Right, system, what else can you do? can you show me my stats or something like that?" Nathan started asking.
[You can check your stats anytime, host.]
With that, a panel appeared in front of him.
[Host : Nathan Miller
Age : 21
Status : Human (Mutated)
Strength : 6 (Average 10)
Agility : 5 (Average 10)
Stamina : 4 (Average 10)
Abilities : None.
Tools : None.]
"So little?" Nathan's mouth twitched seeing his pitiful stats. It was one thing to know he was weak but to see the pitiful stats with his eyes, he couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed.
After shaking his head, Nathan focused on the interface again.
A frown appeared on his face as he noticed the word mutated beside human.
"System , what does it mean? Why am I mutated? Does that mean I am infected by zombie virus ?"
[Mutation has happened to all organisms on the earth. Naturally, host is not the exception. You're one of the humans to successfully mutate and keep your human form.]
Nathan's heart skipped a beat.
"Then...the zombies outside...are they the result of failed mutation ?"
[You can say so.]
"Holy crap. I thought they became zombies because they were bitten. But wait, I saw them turn into zombies after being bitten."
[The first mutation was not severe so many of the population made the cut without knowing so. However, being bitten by the zombies was a different matter. Most of the humans' immune system can't deal the infection of being bitten so naturally, a lot of mutated humans would turn into zombies if bitten.]
"That is.. so scary." Nathan could almost feel a cold sweat passing over him.
After taking a moment to collect his thoughts, Nathan asked the system, again.
"System , do I get any starter packs or something?"
[Congratulations! You have received a starter pack and a random ability.]
Nathan felt a bit relieved at that.
"Open Starter pack."
[Starter pack has been opened. You gained 1 x Low-tier Sword, 1 x Stamina Restoration Potion, 2x Stats boost card (Duration : 2 hrs)]
As System's interface appeared in front of his eyes, Nathan could see the minature version of a sword, a potion bottle and a card in the system inventory space. He took out the sword to inspect it closely. With a thought, the sword appeared in his hands and Nathan nodded approvingly.
[Low-tier Sword. Capable of cutting off the low-tier zombies' head.]
The sword was about fifteen inches long, cold to the touch and looked extremely sharp. Nathan wanted to test out the sharpness of the sword but he knew he couldn't do it here. If he were to slash the shelves and the things on those shelves fall down accidentally, a loud noise would be made. The last thing he want now was a hoard of zombies.
So, Nathan moved on to look at the other two things he got. Stamina Restoration potion was in a small glass bottle and the potion itself was only two to three mouthfuls.
[One mouthful of the potion regains 30% of your stamina. ]
A piece of information could be seen as soon as he touched the bottle.
"So, basically I can regain 90% of my stamina as long as I finish the potion. But of course , I can use it in mouthfuls instead of gulping down the whole bottle."
"With that, I don't need to worry about my stamina for now."
After inspecting the potion, he put it back into system's space before taking a look at the 2x stats boost card.
[Can boost your stats by 2 times when used. (Duration 2 hrs)]
It was already apparent from the name but Nathan was happy.
"This can solve my current problem. But, it seems like a waste to use when my stats are so poor. Imagine if use this boost when I'm stronger. The multiplication would be much more. Or at least when I'm as strong as an average person."
Nathan sighed even if he knew it couldn't be helped. He most likely needed to use the card soon if he wanted to escape from his current predicament. He can't stay locked inside a storage room without any food or water, after all.
"Getting stronger myself is the way to go in this Apocalypse. Boosts like this are good but they are temporary. Not to mention how long it would take to get them again." Nathan naturally realized this but he also knew it would take time to train himself. In Apocalypse like this, time was a luxury. No zombies would wait for him just because he hasn't trained yet.
"I also have a random ability pack right? Hopefully , I get some powerful ability to compensate for my poor stats."
"System, open random ability pack."
[Random ability pack has been opened. You gained Six Eyes from Jujutsu Kaisen and Gojo Satoru's sunglasses.]
Nathan was pleasantly surprised by the notification.
Gojo Satoru's six eyes?
It was an overpowred ability!
Even though Gojo Satoru had both Six Eyes and Limitless, Six Eyes is what actually makes him overpowered. Not only he would never run out of cursed energy but also he would also have heightened perception and analysing ability in battles. Not to mention the ability to distinctly tell apart the figures even from the distance.
"But, he uses cursed energy right? But I don't have cursed energy..!"
Nathan frowned but before he could think over this, a sharp pain took over his eyes. He could feel a strange kind of energy was changing his eyes and he could only close his eyes while waiting for the transformation to be over.
"How does the protagonists deal with their powerups? This hurts like hell." Nathan groaned in pain.
The pain receded after about three minutes and only then, Nathan could sigh in relief. He could still feel a stinging sensation in his eyes but he felt much better now.
He opened his eyes experimentally and he realized he could see so much. The sensation was actually a bit overwhelming.
"No wonder that dude covers his eyes." Nathan said in realization. He was still a bit dazed.
"But can I really see if I wear these glasses? This world shouldn't have cursed energy right?"
That was what Nathan didn't understand. It was fine for Gojo to cover his eyes as he could see as a result of cursed energy but without cursed energy in this world, could Nathan do the same?
"Only one way to find out." Nathan put on the glasses and opened his eyes.
He could see and he didn't feel overwhelming sensation at all.
That made Nathan frown even more.
In this world, there weren't supposed to be cursed energy.
But, of course, there weren't supposed to be zombies either.
Nathan got a feeling that maybe their whole world had changed somehow along with the appearance of zombies.
At that moment, his stomach rumbled.
And Nathan realized he didn't even had breakfast because he was doing last minute studying for the final exam.
"Well, let's get some food first. I can figure that out later." He told himself.
He then started to strategize where to go. The building he was currently in was a five-storey building and he was on the third floor. The cafeteria was on the ground floor so he would need to go down two whole foors filled with feral zombies.
"Undoubtedly , there will be a lot of food in Cafeteria but can I go down there?"
Nathan decided to take a look at his stats again.
[Host : Nathan Miller
Age : 21
Status : Human (Mutated)
Strength : 6 (Average 10)
Agility : 5 (Average 10)
Stamina : 4 (Average 10)
Abilities : Six Eyes.
Tools : Low-tier Sword.
Boosts active : None.]
Even if he got Six Eyes, his stats were still the same. It's because Six Eyes doesn't directly enhance his body's strength except for perception and brain capabilities in battles. So, Nathan wasn't willing to face a hoard of zombies, just yet. However, that means Nathan had to find another place.
"There are some vending machines on each floor." Nathan remembered.
He was now at the corner of the building but if he walked through the hallway and turn left, he would get to the classroom hallway. There, several vending machines can be found.
The hallway would be filled with zombies but Nathan knew it was inevitable. The breakout happened just before exams when the students and teachers gathered in the building, after all.
As for the dormitories, while he had his food stored in his room, it was in a separate building so going back to the dorms was also out of question.
"Vending machines it is, then!"
Nathan made a decision swiftly. It was still better than going through two floors which would also be filled with zombies or going to the other building.
"But before that, I need to make some prepartions."
He looked around the room to find something useful but to his dismay, he didn't actually find anything useful except for ropes and tapes.
Nathan remembered he hadn't took out the sword he got from the starter pack so there must be some system space for storing items. He initially wanted to try out if he could put things in there but he was disappointed to find out that only things he got from system could be put into system space.
Fortunately , he still had his backpack as he didn't throw it away while running for his life. It wasn't that Nathan didn't want to do so. Rather, he forgot to do so. Because of that, he now had a backpack to store his loot.
He put the ropes and tapes into his backpack and then adjusted his clothes. He was now wearing a T-shirt and black pants so it wasn't really much to adjust anyway. He however, taped the shoe laces so that the laces won't come undone wjen he was fighting with zombies. If he were to trip and fall over shoe laces while fighting with zombies, he would be over!
Then, Nathan hold the sword in his right hand and adjusted his sunglasses so they wouldn't fall during the fight. He actually made the tape stick in both sides before placing it between the back of his ear and the sunglasses.
With a deep breath, Nathan put his hands on the door knob, turning it.
